One hears of wonderful new applica« tions or uses for the electric current— | some of real value, others nonsensical, ‘ut probally one of the latest is the esting of wine by means of the tele- phone. According to #he Paris corre- spondent ef a Loudon* daily paper, a M. Maneuvrier, director of the labora- tory of rezeirches of the Farls Faculty of Sciences, nas discovered an infalli- ble metho? ascertaining by means of the telephone how much a given quan- tity of wine has been watered. The principle on which the invention rests is the variable conguctivity of different ligiuds, notably wine and water. The originality of M. Maneuvrier's ingeni- ous application is his use of the tele- phone to determne to what degree the liquid under observation is a condue- tor. He has constructed an apparatus, the details of which are wot given, whirh is said to achieve this object satisfactorily and accurately. The apparatus works as follows: Two vessels, one containing wina known to be pure, an® the other the same quantity of the wine to be tested, are placed on an instrument outwardly resembling a pair of scales. The tele. phone is in cbntact with both liquids. If the sample of wine under observa- tion is as pure as the standard used for comparison no sound is heard; if, on the contrary, it contains water, the tell-tale telephone “speaks,” and the greater the proportion of water the louder the instrument complains. HOW JAPS PLAY KEN. 01d Game Gives Belles of #ar Fas? Opportunity te Display Their } Beautiful Hands. In its most widely practiced form the basis of the Japanese game of ken is that the fully outstretched hand signi- fies paper; the fully closed hand, a stone; and two fingers alone extended, the rest being closed, scissors. Each of the players, says the Japan Mail, counting one, ¢wo, three, throws out his hand, at the moment of pronuncing three, and the out whose manual symbol is superior to that of the others, according to the the ory of the came, was the trial. Superiority is determined on the hy- pothesis that whereas scissors cannot eut a stone, they can cut paper, and whereas paper Is cut by zo~tssors, it can wrap ug au stone. Consequently scissors is in- ferior to stone, but conquers paper; ston {s inferior to paper, but conquers seis. sors, and paper is inferior to scissors but conquers stone. There are innu. merable varieties of the gan.e—for it is not a mere method of determining a dis. pute of priority—and they are con stantly aided to by ingenious young le- dies, the dancing-girl class especially, who play It with exquisite grace and ju- dicious enhancement of beautiful hands and arms Rabbits, which have been the pest ol Australia and New Zealand for many years, have now become a source of large revenue. brozen rabbits to the valuc of over $80:,000 were exported from Vie- toria, New Zealand, last year, in addi tion to $79,000 warth of preserved 1ab bits. This business is daily increasing. Now that the trapping industry is such an important one, employing as it does several thousand hands, and is largely eftective in lLeeping the ralbit pest in check, the chances are that the meth- ods of compulsory suppression now en- forced on landholders will at least be moderated by the government. The rabbiis in Australia and New Zealand were originally shipped from England, 2nd it is almost imyossible tc keep them out of the catfle ranches. Fences have been built around these taticns with a wire*netiing sunk 1es below the surface to prevent bts from getting inside, but as as grass becomes short on the outside, “Mr. Bunnie” will burrow un- der the wire netting and eat up the grass on the inside. Rabbits in this country rarely burrow, but are to be found in stumps of trees and under fallen timber. In and about Chicago, where land is divided for build- Ing purposes, ranbits male their homes uuder the =» 1d n sidewalls, and can be easily tarnec out by a good dog. Such, however, i not the habit of the Australian pest. soon Reappenrance in Baltic Drives Away Small Fish—Fiany Tribe Likes Change of Scene. As is well known, fish like a change of home, and frequently, without apparent reason, abandon waters in which they have long disported, ard are next found in some distant part of the sea. A de- sire for a change of scene, however, is not the cause of the pilchards suddenly leaving the west coast of France, and the fishermen are unable to discover the reason. Now it is announced, accovding to the testimony of fishermen, that the shark has returned to European waters. In the Baltic, where sharks had been ex- tinct since 1759, they have made their reappearance in considerable numbers, and several fishing boats report having whole catches of flsh devoured from the nets, which were broken, in the Belt and the Cattegat. A flsherman who fell overboard narrowly escaped with hig life. Shoals of sharks, some of them of large size, have been seen off the Ger mau coast, and they are even reported as becoming far from rare in the North sea. Their presence is attributed to their pur- suit of the herring shoals on the west coast of Norway. British Mammals, In his “British Mammals,” Sir Harry Johnson's new book, that writer says that man “is the commonest mammal in our islands at the present day, with the doubtful exception of the long-tai’ed field mouse; and excepting the common mow e brown and the black rat. man 1s probably the most recently ar- rived mammal in the British islands.” “Coren's Capitol, Seoul, the capital of Corea, is 18 miles from Its scaport, Chemulpe, on the Yel low sea amp When tient led with eopmipation try Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablete.
