Apartments permitted in % Marietta downtown The Marietta Borough Council adopted a zoning amendment allowing mult- iple family dwellings within the general commercial district at last Tuesday's regular monthly meeting. Owners wishing to con- vert their properties would have to conform with certain requirements and submit applications to the zoning board. Mayor J.R. Flannagan, in other action, proclaimed May 17 as the second annual Historic Marietta Day. The Marietta Restoration Assoc- iates are sponoring the event. To supply ample parking area during the May 17 activities, Council agreed to close Market Street to vehicular traffic from the S-bend to Perry Street. Also closed will be North Water- ford Avenue from West Walnut to Market Street. As of the Tuesday evening meeting, council had received seven applica- tions for police chief. The term begins May 1. Six firemen will be paid the costs of the special permits they had to obtain to drive the new fire truck. Barry Eppley, fire chief, proposed that the borough’s fire alarm system be connected to county com- munications network. A petition asking for the removal of all parking meters in the borough, signed by 209 people, was submitted to the council. Bids from seven insur- ance agencies for blanket policies to cover all borough property were referred to the borough solicitor for review. A master roadway plan worked out by borough engineer Dan Lake was adopted. The plan calls for repair or reconstruction of the following streets: Gay from Fairview to Longeneck- er, Chestnut, Biddle from Market to Essex, Pine from Market to East Walnut, Essex from Decatur to Bridge, Clay from Market to front, Bank from Market to Front, and Waterford from Market to Front. Judy Bass was appointed housing officer and Betty Sementelli as deputy, each at a salary of $750 per year. Zoning permits were issued for a special except- ion for a home occupation at 146 W. Front St., for an addition at 235 W. Walnut St., and for coverting to duplexes at 37 and 282 W. Market St. A special meeting will be held March 18 to act on a proposal to make loans or grants available to residents through the Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority. The Marietta Jaycees were granted permission to conduct the annual 4th of July celebration July 3-6 at War Memorial Park. The schedule of games for the Marietta Youth Association, April 1 to August 16 was approved. The schedule is for seven boys baseball and four girls softball teams. Registration for the teams will be on the next three Saturdays at the Marietta Community House [continued on Page 6] John W. W. Loose to address Marietta group on ‘‘conception, birth, infancy’’ of borough ‘‘Marietta: Its Concept- ion, Birth and Infancy’’ is the title of the program for this month’s regular meet- ing of the Marietta Restor- ation Associates. Mr. John W. W. Loose will be the speaker. This program will be held Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 pm in the Commun- ity House. The public is welcome. ‘Jack’’ Loose, chairman of the Social Studies depart- ment at Donegal High School, President of the Lancaster County Historical Society and author of numerous books and art- icles, has a special interest in Marietta history. He did his graduate work on the Iron Industry in Marietta. Anyone who has heard him speak know his talks are. both enlightening and enter- — taining as he has the ability to bring the past to life in a very real and slightly provacative way. The regular business meeting will follow in which plans for Historic Marietta Day—May 17—will be dis- cussed. Businesses are being encouraged to do something special that day as activities planned should draw many people to town. If you own a business, would like to participate and did not receive a letter explaining plans for the day, notify the Associates at P.O. Box 3. Coach Freund, calling Mitch ‘‘possibly the best basketball player in the history of Donegal,’ added, ‘‘Whatever else you say about him, remember that he's a real gentleman.’ The Most Valuable Player trophy. it was announced, will henceforth be called The Bill Barto Memorial trophy, in honor of the Indians’ most ardent booster, who died this year. Mrs. Barto handed Mitch his award. The Most Improved Player Trophy went to underclassman Scott Peters, at left in the photo. Scott could well become the backbone of next year's squad.
