Smith 26 West Walnut St. Marietta, PA 17547 Dear Sirs, I’m writing this letter because I'd like Mr. Hubert Peters to be Teacher of the Week. I want Mr. Peters to be Teacher of the Week because he resembles my dad and also acts like him somewhat. Semetimes we spend our class time talking. Mr. Peters talks about how he spent his childhood and teenage days, also his later life. He told us how math will help us later. He’ll tell us the correct way to do things. He is very under- standing. This is his last year for teaching. This is why I want Mr. Hubert Peters to be Teacher of the Week. : Sincerely, Theresa Smith The above letter was followed by a phone call by Theresa, suggesting Mr. Smith as Teacher of the Week. We took Theresa’s advice and went to see Mr. Peters. Hubert Peters, in his thirty-third year of teaching, is a math teacher, assistant to the Principal and in charge of all attendance at Beahm Junior High. And he loves kids. ‘“You have got to love teaching and being with students to do a good job of it,”” he declares. Before teaching in the Donegal District, Mr. Peters was math, Physical educa- tion and health teaching at Marietta High School. “It was a full-time job!’’ he laughs. ‘“There was never a free period. 1 taught all three subjects to every student in the school. Why, I can even remember using my lunch period to discuss the problems of various students with the principal, Ralph Coleman. And, 1 loved every minute of it.”’ Marietta High School was the smallest in the county, according to Mr. Peters, with only sixteen to twenty [continued on page 5] go to Lebanon on Thursday and tangle with Cocalico here on Saturday. January 16, 1980 Donegal girls continue on their winning ways Donegal'’s girls basketball team went on their merry way last week to take Penn Manor 69 to 34 on Tuesday and then Lampeter-Stras- burg, 91 to S50 on Friday. The game with Penn Manor was an important one, because Penn Manor had been undefeated, like Donegal, in league compet- ition before their encounter last week. The defeat of Penn Manor leaves the Indian maidens in undisput- ed lead of their section. Donegal started slow; Penn Manor was ahead, S to 2; Donegal led only 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. But in the second quarter the girls . from Donegal found themselves and out- scored their adversaries, 24 to 4. Individual scoring was: Hershey, 16; Kinsey, 15; Keffer, 13; Derr, 13; Merchant, 9; Germer, 3. In the game with Lampeter-Strasburg Keffer scored 23 points; Kinsey, 19; Merchant, 18; Derr, 17; Hershey, 9; Donovan, 2; Miller, 2; Stoner, 1. On Wednesday the girls play Pequea Valley here, and on Friday they play Columbia heré. Surprise start for junior high basketball team; 8 and 1 record Probably the most pleas- ant surprise this year at Beahm Junior High has been the success of the junior high basketball team. To date, Coach Jim Zuch’s young Indians have won eight out of their first nine ball games! Many were skeptical that this year’s team could win as many games as last year’s junior Hubert Peters high team, which had only § victories, but this year’s team has already bettered that mark-and with a major portion of its schedule still remaining. Included among their victories is a Christmas tournament championship that was held at Eastern High School in Wrightsville. Donegal first defeated the host team, Easter York, and the following evening the team beat Dallastown Junior High to win the tournament. The team’s weakest point is its rebounding strength; the team is physically small. However, a scrappy half- court and full-court press and some sizzling outside shooting has more than compensated for the team’s size. The team’s catalyst in ninth grader Darrell Ris- berg. His aggressive play affects the rest of the team as he hustles up and down the court. Center Bill Miller and forward Wayne Chappel help Risberg attempt to control the boards. The outside shooting is handled mostly by seventh grader Mike Sarbaugh and ninth grader Steve Swope. When Zuch needs to rely on his bench, he usually calls on Ted Stephens or Keith Mueller. The team still must play its most challenging part of the schedule when it faced Hempfield, Manheim Town- ship, Wheatland, Elizabeth- town and Columbia, but the success the players have had thus far can give them the confidence needed for continued victories. Below is the portion of the schedule already played, and following the schedule is a combined roster of the varsity and jayvee junior high teams.
