The young men, numbering close to one hundred, started their season of football in = August and played most of their games at the Donegal High School on Sunday afternoons. There are four teams—D, C, B, and A. The boys are grouped by age and weight and are moved to the next category according to their weight. This season the B team competed in the Red Rose Midget Championships, making the play-offs. The Donegal Midgets are proud of the fact that they were among-the first to organize the Red Rose Midget Football League in Lancas- ter County. Until this year, the group had been self-supporting. Government safety regula- tions have been established to require helmet approvals. The team will now need $3,500 for about one hundred new helmets, so that the boys of the Donegal School District Area can continue to play football. If you would like to contribute to this worthwhile project, please send donations to: The Donegal Braves & Midget Football Team, 271 Park Ave., Mount Joy, Pa. 17552. You may designate your contribution for either helmets or general funds. More impressive than the score were the statistics for the game. Donegal piled up a total of 157 yards to Norlebco’s 20. Donegal had 9 first downs to Norlebco’s 1, and that single first down resulted from a penalty. Norlebco’s single touch- down resulted from a blocked Donegal punt. Even that single touch- down by Norlebco might not have been scored if all Donegal’s players had been on the field. Some players had been injured and left the field; substitutions had been sent in; but with mud covering jersies and num- bers, it was difficult to see exactly who was and who wasn’t on the field. The films of the game revealed there were only ten Indians playing when Norlebco scored. Coach Deshler was very pleased with the game, especially the defense which had done an excellent job previously this year. Leonard Mummau, who scored one of the touch- downs, carried the ball 19 times for 88 yards. Steve Meszaros, who scored an- other TD, carried 18 times for 58 yards. Jeff Mihajlov carried 6 times for 36 yards. The Jayvees have had a very good season this year. They are undefeated, hav- ing won S games and tied one, 0-0, with Solanco. Three of their games were cancelled, and Coach Desh- ler believes they would have won those games against not very strong teams. In other words, prospects are bright for DHS next year with relatively few seniors leaving and strong players coming up to the first-string from the Jayvees. The 9th grade team won 2 and lost 3 this year. They suffered from more than their due of broken bones. . Next week it will be Annville-Cleona there at 2 p.m. The game will be tough. Annville-Cleona is tied with ELCO and Garden Spot for first place. They will feel a lot of pressure: on them because of their position, with their rivals playing fairly weak teams. Coach Deshler plans to make the most of this pressure, by turning on Donegal heat from the opening kickoff. He remem- bers well being in a similar spot last year when his first-place team felt the pressure of their final game. It was close. Donegal could have lost. Indians! You can prove Predicto wrong!
