Hoover and growth of Assembly of God [continued from front page] one member to 200 members—that’s a growth rate of 19,900 per cent, an average annual growth rate of 1,990 per cent. Most of the growth in numbers has occurred in the past four years since the church erected its new sanctuary, from 30 to 200 members, an increase of 570 per cent. *“God is just blessing us wonderfully,”” says Rev. Hoover. How did Rev. Hoover, who lives in Strasburg and who worshipped at the Assembly of God in Lancaster, happen to come to Marietta? *“God laid it on my heart. ‘That’s a hard place up there,’ friends warned him in Lancaster, but God led me here. “*There are _ doctors, teachers, business execut- ives in my congregation,’ says Rev. Hoover, almost incredulously, ‘‘and 1 feel like a little nobody.’ He pauses and thinks. ‘‘It’s because of the ministry that God has put on me,” he concludes. *“God is not just blessing us . by increasing our numbers. There are mira- cles of healing being accomplished here. For example, this week I visited a baby in the hospital. She had pneumonia, such con- gestion in her little lungs. I prayed for her. Others prayed for her. Yesterday she came home, healed. It’s just a miracle of God.”’ Rev. Hoover goes on to explain the beliefs of his church. ‘“Healing is in the Atonement. We believe in spiritual healing of the body. We believe in being filled with the Holy Spirit. We believe in Salvation, and we believe in Christ’s soon return. ‘““We believe that He is coming back soon. That is our hope. ‘I feel that we have a real love for people. Jesus loved us when we were in sin and far from Him and He was displeased with us. He wants us to have a love for people, and Jesus is relevant today. ‘“He is taking care of our physical, spiritual, and our financial needs. We reach him through prayer. We have a hope planted in us by prayer. ‘“We have a young couple here who used to be alcoholics. Their lives were changed. They are some of the happiest people in our congregation. “Our people are prayer warriors. They are at the battlefront of prayer. They just pray, and things happen. That is why we are experiencing this victorious and phenomenal growth. ‘I was here in the church alone one day recently praying, not audibly, when He spoke to my inner spirit. He told me to be prepared for phenomenal growth and to make plans to build. ‘““We have already con- tacted several contractors. We are adding to our building. We will build space to seat S00 additional people, built a completely new sanctuary adjoining our present structure in an L-shape. Under the new sanctuary will be Sunday School classrooms, a bap- tistry, and kitchen facilities. Our present sanctuary will house our Junior Church and youth programs. “God has been really blessing us. ‘““When we celebrated the third anniversary of our new building in May, there were children sitting on the floor. The aisles were jammed. There were people in the foyer and overflowing the doors and standing outside. A public address system brought the service to them.” Rev. Hoover says that many people come to the Assembly of God, because they feel ‘‘rejected’’ in the ‘““mainline’’ churches. “‘It is our hope,’ he said, ‘‘that the other churches will come to the realization that the Holy Spirit is relevant for today. Our prayer is that they will open their hearts to the charismatic movement. ‘“We are living in the very end. No man knows the day or the hour, but you can tell by the signs of the times that we can expect the return of the Lord. “The Bible predicted the founding of the state of Israel. The end shall come in the same generation. We must be ready.” Rev. Hoover was convert- ed to Christianity when he was 21. ‘I gave my heart to the Lord. He called me, and He changed my life. “lI was married, had a family to support. I could not afford to attend Bible College, so I took corres- pondence courses with the Green Lane Bible Courses. God had spoken to me and told me I was to go into the ministry, although when I started my studies I was not then certain about what phase of the ministry I would undertake. “Then I got the call to go to Marietta. I did not know whether the ministry here would succeed or fail. If it failed, the doors of the church here would be closed permanently. I felt it was a terrific responsibility; 1 made it a matter of prayer.”’ Until two years ago, Rev. Hoover worked full-time as a painter and paperhanger, in addition to being minister to the Marietta congregat- ion, but with the church growing so rapidly the congregation now had both the need and the financial means to support their pastor completely. ‘‘They have been taking good care of me,” says a grateful and fulfilled Rev.
