Hiestand in memory of their son, Benjamin, who was killed as a pilot in World War One. Benjamin’s brother, Fitz- gerald Hiestand, lives in Marietta today. Benjamin’s and Fitzger- ald’s mother, Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand was born Bessie Fitzgerald, daughter of Captain Jenkins A. Fitzger- ald, M.D., and Emily McCorkle Fitzgerald. Capt. Fitzgerald was an Army doctor who served with distinction during the Civil War, and afterward at various Army posts in the West. Emily Fitzgerald wrote regular letters from the West to her mother, Elizabeth McCorkle, in Columbia. Pa. These letters were preserved by Bessie Hiestand and published in 1962.
