Hiestand reports on East Donegal water John Hiestand of the Water Authority reported on the possibility of sinking a new test well in the township. Having taken a survey of local wells, he told the supervisors that two adjacent wells both had low nitrate counts. Nitrates are an important factor in drilling any new well, because federal reg- ulations prohibit more than a certain small percentage of the chemical. Nitrates are a large proportion of fertilizers which farmers spread on their fields. The nitrates get into the ground water and cause big head- aches for most rural water departments. Because the two low- nitrate wells are close together, Mr. Hiestand proposed drilling a six inch hole nearby in hopes of finding a good supply of federally acceptable water. Both wells are about 300 feet deep. - The supervisors seemed receptive to the idea. They discussed hiring a geologist to pick a likely spot for drilling, which might end up on a small parcel of land that the township already owns near the low nitrate wells. The subject of dowsing also came up. Mr. Bru- baker told some stories which supported the claims of dowers, who can locate underground water by extra-sensory means. Mr. Drager, however, doubts that water can be found this way.
