Hostilities began when local balloonist Dick Hess repeatedly invaded territory claimed by the hangliding Luftwaffe. An infuriated Kapitan Osborne said, ‘“Next time Hess violates our air space, he’s going to be intercepted by one of our World War One balloon busters.’”’ (Osborne was apparently referring to his motorized bi-wing hang glider, which is currently being repaired following an unconventional landing on the machine’s maiden flight). Kapitan Osborne contin- ued, ‘‘First he’ll hear something that sounds like an out-of-control lawn mower; then he’ll see the Iron Cross on the top wings; then he’ll see a crazy-looking guy in a scarf and goggles. I have a top speed of approximately 45 miles per hour, and I know he can’t outrun that.” §§§ John Dorwart joined the Mount Joy Rotary Club. As you can see, he failed to center the shot. The man with the beard is Dick Hess of RD2 Mount Joy, owner of the balloon. The other fellow is Dick's neighbor, Fred Reiner. After Dick dropped off Santa Claus at Seiler School last Saturday, he took Fred for a ride. [Fred and his father, ‘‘Shorty’’ Reiner, raced after the balloon in a pickup truck for much of the afternoon while Dick took some Lebanon County people up. Four of them had hired the balloon for the afternoon.] Fred was at the controls for most of the flight, under Dick's supervision. Fred is a freshman at Donegal High School.
