September 20, 1978 DID YOU HEAR? Mrs. Ethel Wang, 82, formerly of San Francisco, has come to Mount Joy to make her home with her niece, Mrs. John Bruce Greiner and her husband at 251 Park Ave., Mount Joy. Mrs. Wang had lived in San Francisco for 30 years, after leaving Minnesota, where both she and Mrs. Greiner grew up. §§§ The residents of Delta Street, especially the Hoff- masters and Mrs. Haw- thorne, at the low point, are very happy about the boro’s construction of a new storm sewer. §§8§ La Von (Mrs. John W.) Harnish enjoys a fine reputation in Mount Joy for her trumpet playing. Friends are apt to re- ceive a telephone call on their birthdays. They hear no human voice, but they do hear the jolly notes of “Happy Birthday to You,”’ played on a trumpet. Then, the phone is gently hung up. Or at the crack of midnight at the very end of the year, a phone will ring, and when it is picked up, the sweet notes of ‘‘Auld Lang Syne,” played on a trumpet, of course, will be heard. When La Von was ‘“‘exhaustéd’’ from the Mount Joy Joycyettes last year, some friends man- aged to get La Von's trumpet without her know- ledge, and ‘‘retire’’ it in a colorful funeral ceremony in which participants wore appropriate garbs of mour- ning. This past August La Von blew taps at the conclusion of each Donegal Day Camp in Sico Park. At the end of her first performance, La Von heard a round of applause from hearers—the first time in history that anyone had applauded the playing of taps. A five-year-old boy came up to Mrs. Harnish after her blowing of taps and said, ‘“You’re really good... I think I want to play the trumpet when I grow up.” That little boy has shown more appreciation for La Von's playing than many of her friends. §§§ Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Thus, the black eye, which attracted a lot of attention at the Merchandiser, where she works. This was not Melanie’s first equestrian accident.
