We aren’t sure what it is about, so we are printing it verbatim. -ed.] POSSE COMITATUS United States Citizens for Constitutional Rights As May 1 is Law Day, it is of interest that the first meeting of the Posse Comi- tatus (Latin for the Power or Force of the County)- —generally known as a posse or a sheriff's posse— was held last Saturday in Lancaster. One of the chief objec- tives of the Posse Comitat- us is to guarantee the preservation of the Law of the United States Constitu- tion for all citizens residing within a given county or parish in the United States. The Posse Comitatus is the result of a growing movement throughout the nation of individuals co- operating with one another. Such groups or committees now exist in Bucks and Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania; one in New Jersey as well as in the states of Arizona, Californ- ia, Colorado and as many as S500 county committees in Michigan. The charter of the Posse Comitatus in Lancaster County is based on the authority of the Consti- tution of the Common- wealth and that of the United States, the Declara- tion of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Magna Carta and the Common Law. This charter is on file at the Lancaster County Court House, and a copy is also on file with the Sheriff. The Posse Comitatus or Sheriff's Posse Comitatus advocates total co-operation with local courts, law enforcement officers and other officials provided that those various officials also uphold the statutes of law as detailed in the foregoing documents.
