sets
new records
The March of Dimes ’78
Walkathon of April 16
broke previous records for
the event. 782 people
walked this year as
opposed to 410 last year;
$28,200 was raised by the
walkers, more than double
the amount brought in by
last year’s benefit.

DHS teachers address state conference

Three Donegal teachers
shared their effective Par-
ent Involvement Programs
with Federal Coordinators
in a state conference in
Philadelphia, April 17 &
18. In a recent program
evaluation Mr. James
Holmes, Regional Reviewer
for District III, ESEA Title
I Programs, praised the
three teachers for their
exemplary parent programs
and felt these programs
were worthy of sharing
with other school districts
throughout the state.
Mrs. Sarah Hess, read-
ing specialist at Grandview,
presented her program for
parents called G.R.A.S.P.
(Grandview’s Reading Ad-
venture for Supportive
Parents) twice during the
four day conference. Her
program has been active
for several years. This year
the group has been using a
nine month program pub-
lished by American Guid-
ance Service called STEP
(Systematic Training for
Effective Parenting).
Mrs. Elizabeth Smedley
and Mrs. Carol Lambert,
reading specialists at River-
view, also made their pre-
sentation twice at the con-
ference. All three teachers
used slides of actual meet-
ings and displayed mater-
ials used. Mrs. Lambert
and Mrs. Smedley used a

Service Seminar to be held
A Patient Service Semi-
nar will be held in the
Auditorium of the Eliza-
bethtown Hospital for
Children and Youth on
Saturday, May 6, at 10:00
a.m. The seminar is
sponsored by the Central
Pennsylvania Area Chapter
of the Muscular Dystrophy
Assoc. There will be no
charge to attend, but
pre-registration is required.

The third meeting of the
newly-formed Lancaster
Area Chapter of NOW (the
National Organization for
Women) will be held on
Monday, April 24 at
7:30PM, at the Lancaster
YWCA.
On Tuesday, April 25,
women form this area will
be going to Washington,
D.C., as part of a national
effort to visit their repre-
sentatives to urge exten-
sion of the Equal Rights
Amendment ratification
deadline.

Marine Private 1st class
Walter R. Gantz Jr., son of
Eleanor G. Sipel of 327 W.
Donegal Street, Mount Joy,
Pa., has completed recruit
training at the Marine
Corps Recruit Depot,
Parris Island, S.C.
During the nine-week
training cycle, he learned
the basics of battlefield
survival, participated in a
physical conditioning pro-
gram, and gained proficien-
cy in a variety of military
skills.
A 1977 graduate of
«+ Poquea.Vally. Winery .on . . Ranegal High School, he
joined the Marine Corps in
December 1977.
unit approach that involved
many parents of children in
their program. Many of the
activities in their unit
titled, ‘Trucking U.S.A.”
have received recent news
coverage. This program
used student surroundings
to motivate children with
little interest in reading.
The three teachers were
accompanied by Mrs. Bar-
bara Portner, a parent, and
their coordinator who intro-
duced them at the Pennsyl-
vania Association of Fed-
eral Programs Coordinators
Conference. Donegal
should be very proud of the
achievements of these
three teachers in their
field.
MS volunteer
workers needed
The Multiple. Schlerosis
Hope Chest needs volun-
teers in E-town and
Marietta areas to complete
the list of house-to-house
marchers who are needed
for the funds campaign.
The campaign runs May 14

young adults, crippling

volunteer and help raise
funds for research into this

RENT-A-KID is a pro-
gram that combines the
needs of the elderly and
teenagers. Older people get
help with odd jobs; teens
over 12 get work. The
suggested rate of pay is $2
an hour. If you are in
either bracket and interest-
ed, call the Office of Aging
at 299-7979. The Office of
Aging only arranges the
contacts, and does not
supervise or take any
responsiblility or liability.
East Donegal
Supervisors meet
* The East Donegal Super-
visors adopted, on the
recomendation of the town-
ship Planning Commission,
the Fire and Panic regula-
tions of the Pennsylvania
Department of Labor and
Industry. Approval was
unanimous.
The township will employ
a person, on an hourly
basis, to inspect construc-
tion sites and check for
violations.
All builders and devel-
opers must bring plans, to
the zoning officer for
approval before a permit
will be issued.
The supervisors accepted
the bid of Kline’s Quarry in
Wrightsville to furnish
stone. The bid on S.M.
McMinn of Lancaster was
accepted for oil in the
coming year.
