The Times dropped in on Mr. Loercher’s 2nd year chem class, and got some nice photos but little idea of what the young scien- tists were up to. Our reporter saw Bruce Eyer laboriously wrapping a meter-long glass capillary tube into a helix, and asked him what it was for. ‘‘A gas chromatograph,”’ he replied. He and Mr. Loercher, who had wander- ed over, tried to explain how the gas chromatograph works; we did get that various gasses rush through the tiny glass tube, that a voltmeter has some- thing to do with it, and that it can analyse mixtures of compounds. The tube was Bruce’s 30th try—capillary tubes are about half a millimeter thick and break easily. Michelle Fisher was getting iron to rust at different rates by applying electricity and heat in varying proportions. She was pleased with the results: ‘This one’s rusting really fast!” Denise Grimm was trying to change one sulphur crystal into another. Karen Albright had dozens of beakers in a tray. We didn’t comrehend her ex- periment at all. ENJOY GOOD FOOD AT MOUNT JOY RESTAURANT Check Our DAILY SPECIALS Phone a 653-5357 | Monday thru Saturday 5AM to 8 PM Sundays — 7AM to 2 PM!
