October 26, 1977 Indians slip to 2nd place —but they may recover lead next Friday Penalties and unfortunately timed mistakes hampered the Indian offense. Photo shows L-S defenders struggling to bring rampaging Pete Splain to the ground. There was nothing drastically wrong with the Indians’ game. It was just a matter of timing. Penalties came at the wrong times. The offensive line blocked the wrong people in a few key plays. Lampeter-Strasburg play- ed almost flawlessly: it was their best performance of the season. When the dust had cleared, L-S had won the game 15-0, and Donegal was no longer in first place in Section 3. There is a good chance that Donegal will recover its number one position next Friday — and the team won’t even have to get grass stains on their knees. The decisive game next week will involve L-S and league-leading Leb- anon Catholic; and half of the Donegal football team will probably be in the stands, rooting for L-S. If L-S beats Catholic, the Indians and the L-S Pioneers will be tied for first place in the section. If L-S loses, the Indians will have to settle for the number two slot. Lebanon Catholic has lost only one game (to Donegal) this year. L-S has lost twice (to E-town and Penn Manor). L-S is expected to win next Friday. If they do, Lebanon Catholic will drop to second place (they have one tie on their record), while Donegal and L-S share the top rung. Of the three teams still in contention for the Section 3 crown, Donegal has the easiest schedule. Next Saturday’s game against Norlebco should add a win to the Indian column, if they play with their usual skill. Norlebco has won only twice this year. The team’s main weapon is a good passing attack, but the Indian defense may not give Norlebco’s quarter- back much time to take aim. Donegal is favored to win the last three games of the season. If they do, they will have put in the best performance in Donegal history. It’s hard to believe, at this point in the season, that Donegal was expected to be one of the big losers of 1977. In spite of the lop-sided score, the Indians played well against the Pioneers last Friday; the defense performed ef- fectively enough, and the offense was only slight} out of synch, while the Pioneers had one of their best nights of the season. On another night, Don- egal might easily have beaten the explosive but erratic Pioneers, and Indian fans can still justifiably claim to have the best team in the section. If all goes well at L-S next Friday, they may also be able to claim the title. Chiques volleyball results On October 23rd the Chiques League volleyball scores were as follows: Circle Creek won by a forfeit over Columbia Hard- ware; Herr’s Fruit Market beat Fay Sherman’s Res- taurant in 3 games, 12-14, 15-3, and 16-14; and Big L won by a forfeit over Donsco. Julie Meszaros Smith Julie Smith Scores Julie Meszaros Smith, co-captain of the Shippens- burg State women’s field hockey team, has one goal to her credit so far this season. Her team is enjoying one of its best seasons ever this year, having a 7-0-1 record through October 13th.
