Mike spent hours every day, sitting in the empty house thinking about his future and praying for guidance. After about a week, he had made up his mind. Mike went ahead and applied to the Seminary, and was accepted after an interview with the bishop. No one knew until recently, though, that he was giving up Penn State and football. Mike's parents were as surprised as everyone else when he announced his acceptance at the Semin- ary. ‘‘l used to talk to my parents about this when I was younger, but then I stopped,’’ Mike told us. One reason he gave up speaking about his idea was that he felt his school- mates would accept him more readily if they didn’t know he was a future priest. Mike is giving up things that many people spend their lives trying to get, but he feels that there are more important things in life than money, dating, and ‘‘success.”’ He told us, ““This life only lasts about 80 years, but the next one lasts forever.”’ A luncheon for Mike at BVM Church The members of the BVM Catholic Church held a luncheon last Sunday for Mike Carroll, who recently decided to become a priest. Mike is the first person from his church to become a priest or nun in the last 108 years. Mike starts his studies at the Saint Pius X Seminary, in Erlanger, Kentucky, to- day. The luncheon featured talks by Father Michael, Mrs. Mary Ann Migash, Joseph Meszaros, and Ted Dalkiewicz. Mike himself spoke briefly, thanking the congregation for their sup- port. He also told a story: A hiker, walking alone, stumbled off the edge of a cliff. On the way down, he managed to grab a tree root. Looking down, he saw a 1000-foot drop. Looking up, he saw a sheer rock face with no hand holds. The hiker sized up his situation, and yelled as loud as he could, *‘‘IS ANYONE HERE?” **Yes, 1 am here,’’ an- swered a deep voice. “Who are you?’’ asked the hiker. “1 am the Lord,” replied the voice, and then asked, “Do you have faith?‘ “Yes, all the faith in the world, Lord,’ the hiker replied. “Then let go of the tree!’’ the deep voice commanded. The hiker, still hanging on, thought for a few seconds. Then he again yelled up the cliff. ‘‘Is anyone ELSE up there?’ At the conclusion of the luncheon, Mike was pre- sented with a ‘‘diploma’’ prepared by Mrs. Lombard, and a purse full of money to help pay his schooling costs. The purse was pre- sented on behalf of the entire congregation by Father Michael. Mike, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carroll, 328 E. Market, Marietta, was on the football team at DHS and also the wrestling team. He was elected to the presidency of both the local and state Vocational Industrial Clubs of Amer- ica. While at Donegal, he was also Boy of the Month and a member of the Varsity Club. Pet story The Schock Center re- cently held a pet show —without pets. Each entry consisted of a picture of the owner’s beast and a story about the animal. Carrie Ney of Mount Joy won the Largest Dog award. Esther Hockenberry, also of Mount Joy, owns an albino squirrel which was judged Most Unusual. The squirrel, named Fluffy, is shared with her neighbors. Fluffy has been in Esther's area for several months. John Brown told the best pet story. : Others who entered pet pix and stories were Caleb Myer, Romaine Good, Nedra Brandt, and Millie Way. Obedience champs The Lancaster Kennel Club will hold its Fall Match Show on Sunday, September 4th, at Lam- peter Community Park, Rt. 741, Lampeter, PA. Senior citizens will be admitted free. Registrations will be from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be a parade of cham- pions and obedience title holders, and obedience drill team demonstration. Judges will come from PA, NJ, MD, and DC.
