TV newsman, Andy Farmer, speaks to
Mount Joy Merchants Association
N
Andy Farmer
The Mount Joy Mer-
chants’ Association held
their annual dinner ban-
quet last Saturday night at
6:30 p.m. at Hostetter’s
Dining Hall.
Andy Farmer, of TV
Channel 15, was guest
speaker.
Mr. Farmer told the
group about the ins and
outs of running a relatively
small television station. His
office is in Park City and it
is his responsibility to
cover the Lancaster news
for channel 15.
Mr. Farmer told the
merchants that he must
write about three or four
news stories every day and
that his office is basically a
one-man operation. Be-
cause he gathers the Lan-
caster County news himself
he is sometimes beset by
problems like deciding
which of two simultaneous
news-worthy events to cov-
er.
He impressed upon the
group that help from local
citizens (keeping him up to
date on what's happening
in their communities) is
always appreciated.
In response to the ques-
tion, ‘“Which story did you
enjoy doing most.” Andy
told the merchants about a
young man with one leg
amputated who bicycled
from California to New
Jersey, touching both the
Pacific and Atlantic O-
ceans. He noted that hu-

Cold enough for Ya?
Don’t complain if you live
in Lancaster County. It’s
colder some other places.
For example, Vesajirve,
Finland.
Oili Joenpara, an ex-
change student at DHS,
comes from Vesajirve. This
year$ cold and snow are
nothing to her.
Vesajirve is as far north
as the Yukon Territory, and
the people there enjoy
winter sports of necessity,
and Oili is no exception.
She likes skiing and ice
skating.

Qili and two other ex-
change students have been
studying at Donegal High
School this ycar. Besides
learning to survive the local
weather, the students have
enjoved the chance to study
American customs at close
range.
Oili, a guest of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Heckert, has
noticed that school is easy
here.
lisa Morales, of Mana-
gua, Micaragua, likes the
friendliness and indepen-
dent spirit she has obser-
ved in Americans. She did
not comment on our weath-
er. llsa is staying with Mr.
and Mrs. Ken Newcomer.
Marc-Henry Bataille, of
Lille, France thinks Amer-
ica has too much snow, but
excellent TV. ‘When the
weather gets out of hand,
he settles down in front of
the tube. Marc is staying
with the Edwin Strickler -
family, Long Lane, Mount

Mr. Farmer told the
group that Channel 15 is
dedicated to covering Lan-
caster news thoroughly,
even though it also covers
other nearby cities.
He also asked that view-
ers of Channel 1S let the
station know how they feel
about the station’s pro-
grams. ‘‘We love to get
letters from the viewers,”
he said, ‘‘and all comments
are taken very seriously.
Your letters are the only
way we know that you're
out there watching us and
forming opinions about our
programs.’’
