Donegal massacres Lebanon Catholic at DHS; Indians had 8—3 year
by Chester Wittell
Bleak and cheerless is the landscape,
Bare and barren stands the hill;
Now the dreamy days grow shorter;
Autumn winds more loud and chill.
Earth is sad; the trees are naked,
Shorn of leaf and lingering bloom;
Even the sun, itself, seems darkened
By the lowering clouds that loom.
But within each home and hostel
Festive hearths glow warm and bright,
While the scent of savory viands
Stimulates the appetite;
For today our hearts are gladdened
By a custom old and dear;
Work and worry are forgotten
At a time of rest and cheer.
Hearty signs of expectation
Light each friendly smiling face
As the guests converge for dinner;
Each before his chosen place.
At the table’s head sits father;
Mother at the other end;
In between sit brother, sister,
Or the next of kin or friend.
Midmost in the table’s centre,
Weighed and purchased by the pound,
On a wide and painted platter
Waits the turkey, stuffed and browned.
Now the prayer: ‘‘God, we thank Thee,”
Closing with a low ‘‘Amen!”’
After which a moment’s pausing
Ere the feast’s beginning; then
Comes the buzz of conversation
And the stir as host and guest
Chooses each a favored portion—
White meat, drumstick, wing or breast;
Much ado of passing dishes,
This way, that way and across,—
Filling, yams, hot biscuits, gravy,
Pumpkin pie and apple sauce.
Hallowed by this joyful season.
To all mortal men that live.
May the star of fortune hover
O’er the lives of those who give.
Let us thank God for the bounty
He provides against the dearth,
Which — but for His grace and wisdom—
Were the heritage of earth.
