October 20, 1976 Civil Air Patrol plans mock crash “How will search and rescue find you if you go down?’’ That is the subject of a Civil Air Patrol meeting at the Elizabeth- town-Marietta Airport on Saturday, October 23 at 1 p.m. Visitors at the meeting can munch hot dogs and sand- wiches while they watch a State Police helicopter demonstrate ELT search during a mock crash. The days of searching multi-state areas for down- ed aircraft may be gone forever. Today’s aircraft are equipped with small radio transmitters that be- gin sending out a radio distress signal automatical- ly when triggered by the impact of a crash or hard forced landing. These emergency locator trams- mitters (ELT’s) continue to prove their worth. They are required by law in all aircraft, large and small, old and new. Downed aircraft ELT signals can be picked up by passing aircraft or air con- trollers who constantly monitor the emergency fre- quencies. The crash site is then found by following the signal with a homing re- ceiver. this technique will be demonstrated for inter- ested pilots and Civil De- fense officials by Squadron 308 of the Civil Air Patrol on October 23. The CAP will join local fire com- panies, the State Police helicopter, the E-Town- Mount Joy Forest Fire Crew and Civil - Defense units from northern Lan- caster County in a mock crash, search, and rescue exercise at the Elizabeth- town-Marietta airport. Activities begin at 1 p.m., and will include displays of rescue equipment and ex- planations of their use. For more information contact: Rick Hamm, (1LT, CAP) Sq.
