Funds still needed to cut building debt for Pioneer Fire Co. The Pioneer Fire Co. No. 1, Marietta is canvassing the boro and surrounding areas this week for dona- tions to help reduce the mortgage on the company building. The modern, three-bay structure was dedicated in May of 1975. It cost $80,000. Through the Heil- man memorial fund and various fund raising pro- jects sponsored by the ladies auxiliary, the debt has been reduced to $12,000. If anyone was missed during the annual drive and would like to contri- bute, please call 426-3644 after S p.m., and a pick-up will be made. Business men will also be solicited for contributions. United Way fights pro-gun control image The local United Way has issued the following statement: Some Lancaster Count- ians have let it be known that they will not support the 1976 United Way of Lancaster County fund drive, now in progress, because, they say, the United Way supports gun control. The gun control issue was first raised during United Way's 1973 cam- paign when delegates to a national YWCA convention passed a resolution sup- porting gun control. According to Chris Mc- Murtrie, volunteer cam- paign chairman, ‘‘Anyone still”using the gun control issue as an excuse for not giving is obviously misin- formed. That issue hap- pened three years ago, and one sentence from the re- BUTCHER FARp 1% mi. S. of Mount Joy on Pinkerton Rd. off Marietta Avenue Where we feature our own LOCAL CHOICE BEEF, PORK, VEAL & LAMB CUSTOM BUTCHERING solution specifically ex- cludes sport shooting and hunting from any form of control.”’ “Furthermore,” he said, ‘““no money from Lancaster County's United Way or from our local YWCA was ever spent to further the issue.’ In July, 1974, represent- atives of the PA Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs met in Harrisburg with repre- sentatives of PA YWCA'’s and pledged their ‘‘best efforts to assure the suc- cess of our local United Ways.” McMurtrie added that even if individuals do not support the YWCA, ‘‘there are 37 other United Way agencies which offer vital country-wide community services and depends on the continued generosity of all Lancaster Countians.”’ Mon, Tues, Wed 9 - 5:30 Thurs & Fri8-8 8-5- Phone 653-4087 John H.
