Garrison, Manheim RS, was pro- nounced dead at 7:20 a.m., Sunday at Lancaster Gen- eral Hospital about six hours after the car he was driving went out of control and struck a tree along Elizabethtown Road. State police said Garrison was driving his car east on Elizabethtown Road about 1:45 a.m. The car went off the south berm and struck a tree head-on. State police, who were assisted by Manheim Fire Company and Manheim Rescue Crew, estimated damage to Garrison's car at $1,200. Born in Hershey, Garri- son was the son of Charles T. Garrison Sr., Marietta, and Shirley Landvater Garrison, Penryn. A 1974 graduate of Man- heim Central High School, he was employed as a mixer in the paint shop of Woodstream Corp., Lititz. He was a member of Congregational Bible Church, Marietta. In addition to his parents he is survived by two sis- ters, Loretta E. and Kathy M., at home; two brothers Stephen R. and Dennis L., both in the U.S. Marine Corps; his maternal grand- parents, Arthur and Kath- ryn Stopfel Landvater, Harrisburg; and his pater- nal grandparents, Russell and Sahra Derrow Garri- son, Hummelstown. HENRY HAINES Henry Longenecker Haines, 78, of 11 Center Square, Maytown, died at his home Friday morning. Born in Maytown, he was the son of the late Henry B. and Miriam Longenecker Haines. He was the husband of Anna P. Kready Haines, with whom he celebrated his S5th wedding anniver- sary on September 3. He was a lifelong mem- ber of the Maytown Church of Christ, having served as deacon, elder, trustee, and financial secretary of the church for many years. He was a graduate of Maytown High School, of Lancaster Business College and LaSalle Extension Uni- versity. He also attended Millersville State Normal School. He was a veteran of World War I, having ser- ved as a field clerk with the U.S. Army Corps of Engin- eers, receiving his dis- charge in 1919 from Camp AA Humphreys in VA. He was a ci arter mem- ber of Donegai Post 809, American Legion, which he was instrumental in organ- izing, serving many years as adjutant. He retired from the State Fund Division of PA Bur- eau of Workman’s Com- pensation in 1957 after 20 years of service. He was an accountant. Although handicapped since 1952, he spent much of his time in hand weaving and remained active in church and civic activities. He was also a member of Ashara Lodge 398, Free ° and Accepted Masons, Marietta, for more than 50 years. Surviving besides his widow is a son, John Edward, Newtown Square; a daughter, Miriam E., wife of the Rev. Vernon H. Baum, York; a sister, Anna Haines Shewmah, Sun City Arizona; eight grandchild- ren; and one great-grand- child. Haines was preceded in death by a son, the Rev Henry K. Haines, in 1952. FRANKLIN DUKE Franklin R. (Dukie) Duke 68, of 401 Eden Road, died at the Duke Convalescent Home at 3:30 a.m., Satur- day after a prolonged ill- ness. He was the husband of M. Leora Martin Duke. Duke retired in 1966 after 382 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, an honorary mem- ber of the administrative board of the church and the Sunshine Bible Class. He also belonged to the Conestoga Assembly 23, Artisans, Patriotic Order of Sons of America, and the National Association of Let- ter Carriers. He bowled for many years with the letter carrier group, and was a member of the National Association of Retired Fed- eral Employers. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy. The Dukes celebrated their 49th wedding anni- versity, September 5. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Ben- jamin F. and Belle Dile Duke. In addition to his wife at home, he is survived by two sons, H. Ernest Duke of Gordonville, and Jere R. Duke, of Mount Joy. He also is survived by four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
