by Linda Ross The Marietta Restoration Associates’ House of the Month Award was present- ed to John and Dorothy Goodling of 10 New Haven Street, Marietta. Located next to the Post Office, this two and a half story brick dwelling is especially charming in the summer with its window boxes spilling over with geraniums and its adjacent lawn lush with trees, shrubs, and a vegetable garden. Although the home is in the middle of town, the attractive fencing around the lawn makes it a pleasant and private retreat. John and Dorothy have deeds to the house dating back to 1827. The Inn Keeper for the Cross Keys Hotel lived in the original front part of the Goodling house. The Cross Keys was directly across the street in the building which now houses apartments and offices. Inside the 14 inch thick brick walls of the house there is still a fireplace in working condition and two staircases leading to a re- modeled second floor that features ten inch square Penn Pine beams that came from a log house in Marietta. Dorothy has made the attic into a sewing room.
