July 28, 1976 Letter from Sportsmen’s Assoc. Dear Bishop Ault: The Mount Joy Sports- men’s Association at the regular monthly meeting took issue to your letter of June 30, 1976, to the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster County. We support legislation to place severe mandatory penalties on those who misuse firearms. We oppose legislation to dis- arm those who use firearms lawfully. In regards to the con- stitutional right to bear arms, the second amend- ment states ‘‘The Right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be in- fringed.” The National Guard did not exist when the Bill of Rights was written. The latest Supreme Court ruling in 1939 ruled that the militia shall be defined as all males physically capable of acting in concert for the common defence. Congress defined militia as all males from age 18 to 45. Also under the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 all persons under twenty-one or adjudged mentally -in- competent, habitual drunk- ards, illegal users of drugs, dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces, or having criminal records are prohibited from ever poss- essing a hand gun. If this law is enforced, do we need more? Over one billion rounds of hand gun ammunition are used each year for lawful sporting purposes.
