July 28, 1976 Linda Ackerman was determined to get her high school diploma It took a lot of deter- mination for Mrs. Linda Ackerman, Manor Street, Columbia to get her high school diploma. Linda (whose maiden name is Billett) grew up in Marietta. She had to quit school after the 8th grade because her family was poor and her mother got sick. When her mother got better and was able to work, Linda stayed home to look after the rest of the children. When she dropped out, nobody thought Linda was much of a student. She was in the special education class at Beahm, which made her feel like an academic failure even be- fore she dropped out. “The other kids used to call us names,”” Linda re- calls. “‘I think being in that class held me up.’’ Linda’s family moved to Columbia shortly after she stopped going to school in 1962. Ten years later, in 1972, Linda began going to night school in the basement of a church in Columbia. Linda spent only a few hours a week in class. Most of her knowledge had to be picked up during the long hours at home, as she stuggled through books and grappled with problems at her desk. She also found time to get acquainted with John Ackerman. John was im- pressed by the way Linda attacked her books. ‘“She’s a fighter,” says John. ““Let me tell you, it was tough.”” John must have enjoyed watching Linda do her homework, because he married her. Linda also got some en- couragement from her 8th grade special ed. teacher, Mrs. Edna Guhl. Linda fondly remembers Mrs. Guhl as a teacher who fought to get equal privileges for her special ed. class. ‘“We had old, ratty books, and we never got bus trips like the other kids,” Linda says, ‘‘Mrs. Guhl managed to change some of that.” Linda worked so hard, she managed to get her high school diploma from the state in 1975 - just three years after she began studying. She almost graduated in 1974, but flunked her English test by one point. Most high school stu- dents need 4 years to graduate. Linda says, ‘‘It just goes to show you that some of us didn’t belong in that class.” Mrs. Guhl says, ‘‘Linda was always trying hard to do and get the things she wanted, and 1 am very proud of her.” So far, Linda’s diploma hasn’t helped her land a good job. She was able to work as a sales clerk before she graduated. “lI didn’t tell them 1 hadn’t gone to hign school,”” she says. After they found out I could do the work, they didn’t care.” “I think a diploma helps, though, when you’re look- ing for work,’’ she adds. LLL EY & Lock Shop SHOP HOURS: Mon., Tue., Thu. & Fri.
