No. 1, Mount Joy is in its second week. W. 1. Beahm Junior High School Student Council officially started off the fund drive with a $100 check. The fund drive is to pay for the Hurst Tool and Monitor Defibrillator. Chief Frank Good stated the goal of the fund drive is $10,000. The Hurst Tool nick- named the ‘‘Jaws of Life’’ is a portable power rescued tool that operates quietly, flamelessly and does not employ grinding wheels or saw blades. It is a jawlike device with twin forged arms that can pull or lift 5 tons. It can raise a car roof, steering column, dash, or remove doors. Auxiliary adaptors are available for special applications. The tool can be used on fire scenes, in industrial, commercial, auto, and other rescue areas. The Hurst tool is a proven efficient, time saving tool. When put into service, the tool will be available to neighboring fire depart- ments and ambulances dur- ing an emergency. The closest ‘“‘Jaws of Life’ is located in Manheim where they have proven them- selves numerous times. Delivery of the Hurst Tool is expected any time. One million people suffer heart attacks each year, 350,000 die before reaching hospitals. Heart attacks are the number one medical emergency in the U.S... and our community. On approximately 35% of the emergency ambulance calls of the Friendship Fire Co. No. 1 unit last year, the Defibrillator Heart Monitor could have been used. Immediate treatment of the scene, saves lives when treatment and equipment is available. In order to treat heart attacks properly and effectively, it is necessary to see what the heart is doing. This is possible with the heart monitor, allowing the physician to administer the correct drug. The training of the Friendship emergency medical person- nel and nurses by a local physician was completed June 6. The new ambu- lance placed in service last year and the continued advance training of the ambulance crews, indicate Friendship Fire Company’s commitment to this volun- teer life-saving service. The Defibrillator Heart Monitor is ‘expected to be ordered this week.
