SUSQUEHANNA TIMES - Page 13 DONEGAL CHURCH Members and friends of Donegal Presbyterian Church will be examining their spiritual roots and the role of the Scots-Irish in our country’s founding, as they observe a week of special bicentennial em- phasis from Saturday, June 12th through Sunday, June 20th. Among the events will be the dedication of the newly restored study house which stands next to the church. The celebration will be- gin with the annual Straw- berry Festival sponsored by the men’s association on the church grounds from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday, the 12th, rain or shine. Soup, sandwiches, and beverages will be served in addition to the usual strawberries, cake, and ice cream. “The Scots-Irish in Am- erica During the Time of Revolution’ will be the subject of an address by Dr. Lefferts A. Loetcher, retired professor of Ameri- can Church History at Princeton Seminary, to be presented at both a 9 and 11 a.m. service on Sunday, June 13th. Between the services a dedication of the study house will be conducted by the Pastor, the Rev. Robert C. Murphy. Built in 1811, with a probable log section dating much earlier, the building is now to be named for the pastor at the time of erection, Rev. William Kerr. For many years serving as a home for the church sexton, the structure, now authentically restored, will again house the pastor’s study, plus a meeting room and artifacts display area. Donegal’s honored visitor for the bicentennial obser- vance, the Rev. Charles Marshall, pastor of the mother church in Donegal, Ireland, will present a lecture on Tuesday even- ing, June 15th, and on the 16th a film, ‘‘The Presby- terians’’ which depicts four centuries of mission and ministry, will be shown. All evening services are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday’s event will be the 63rd annual reunion of the Donegal Society which this year will be addressed by the Rev. J. Ernest Somerville, of the First Presbyterian Church, Phil- adelphia, at the 11 a.m. session, and by Dr. Eric Walker, former president of Penn State University, at the afternoon meeting at 2 p.m. Special music will be presented by the Donegal Choir in colonial costume as for all bicentennial services and directed by Mrs. Lynn Millard, and by soloists Joan S. Betty and Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Humphreyville. A tradi- tional feature of this day is the luncheon served in the grove by the ladies of the church. Concluding activities will be a Colonial Craft Day, Saturday, the 19th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring approximately 25 craftsper- sons with demonstrations coordinated by Mrs. Sonia Forry and Mrs. Catherine Aument. A unique feature will be a display of ‘‘Done- gal Church depicted in art” which is open to all who wish to participate by con- tacting Mrs. W. Scott Heisey, Rheems. The “Country Kitchen’ under the direction of Mrs. Louise Seiders and Mrs. Margaret Heisey will be serving soup, sandwiches, and shoo-fly pie. On Sunday, June 20th, the bicentennial committee of which Mrs. J. W. Heisey is chairperson, has invited the newly elected modera- tor of the United Presby- terian Church in the U.S.A. Dr. Thelma Davidson Adair to be the special speaker. Again there will be services at 9 and 11 a.m. The public is cordially invited to all events. An early American Psalm Service has been scheduled for Monday evening, June 14th with Dr. Donald Clap- per, Minister of Music at Pine Street Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg as the Precentor. Psalms were sung instead of hymns by the early Presbyterians at their worship services. The Madrigal Singers and the Bell Choir from Pine Street Church will also participate in this service. CHURCH PICNIC An ‘‘old fashioned” Church Picnic for this bi- centennial year will also be held the same day follow- ing the morning worship service. The picnic will be held at Sico Park. There will be games for all ages, cake walks, and band music provided by the church’s instrumentalists. Plans for the picnic are being developed by the Loyal Son’s Church School class and the Youth Fel- lowship.
