of our indeb dness is maturing and
must soon'be aid ; we hope, therefore,
those indebte, o us for subscription,
advertising o 'oh work, will speedily
pay up in ord.r hat we may "go and
do likewise." 3 all bills aro plenty and
remittances c 4 a made at our risk, for
it will not pay t o expense of sending
out a collector. One dollar is a trifle to
each subscriber, whilst to us it is very
nearly our all.
lir A very dressing railroad acci
dent occured at :Chikies, about a mile
east of this place, ion Tuesday morning
about 'eleven o'clock. It appears that
a lot of cattle broke from one of Mr.
Sterline's fields arid found their way to
the railroad. A passing burthen train
was obstructed and thrown from the
track and two men badly hart; one,
Abraham Rife, the conductor, from May
town, bad his thigh broken and was
otherwise injured. This was Rife's last
trip as a railroader, and was the only
unfortunate one. Another man connect
ed with the train, whose name wo did
not learn, was also injured in the leg.—
Two or three cows were billed. Eight
cars were literally mashed to pieces.
The County Convention met at
Lancaster, ou Wednesday last, and or
ganized by appointing rETltili, MARTIN,
President ; and a number of vice presi
dents and two secretaries. Thu follow
ing names wore planed in nomination
for the State Convention : Jacob P. Fry,
Manor; Wyatt W. Miller, Manor;

who may have any thing to exhibit will
meet at 6 o'clock ; the meeting will open
for visitors at 7 o'clock. The public are

M r. Conrad Marks of this borough
has just received a letter from the fami
ly of Captain Adam Nace, formerly of
this place, who was supposed to have
been killed at the battle of Pittsburg
Landing, but who had his foot shot off
and was taken prisoner. He writes to
his family saying ho is well treated—all
things considered—has had his foot am
putated and is anxiously awaiting an ex
change. That he intends getting a cork
foot and once more taking the field.
ow The M. E. Church in this borough,
baying been closed for some time, under
going extensive repairs, will be re-open
ed next Sunday, June ldth. Rev. J. B.
Maddux, of Columbia, will preach in the
morning at 10, and evening at 8 o'clock.
.All are invited to attend.
Diffenbach has just received a
lot of Kollock's Dandelino Coffee, said
to be an excellent and healthful substi
tute for coffee. It is put up in tin
pound boxes, and is said to bo only
about half the price of ordinary coffee.

s -' 7 * The Grand Lodge of the Order
of Good Templars of the State of Penn
sylvania, held its annual meeting on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, at
Columbia. We learn the attendance
was very largo. Barr Spangler, Esq.,
of this borough, was the representative
of "Susquehanna Lodge."
pEr " Wit-Monday" was disgracefully
observed in our borough. A dutch ball
was carried on nearly all night at the
Town Hall, where 'tis said twenty-six
kegs of lager were drank, and Dutch, as
well as Americans, disgraced them
selves.
On Friday morning the cry of fire
brought the engines out. The "old mud
house" on the Maytown road—used as a
negro but, but, owned by an Industrious
Uerman, was burned to the ground.
tw The Eclipse appeared according
to calculation. The whole duration was
about throe hours, - which was very
beautiful and interesting.
QE' Dr. Hinkle has so far recovered
as to be able to leave his home on a
short visit to Philadelphia.
Cr Notwithstanding the inclement
weather, the Circus was crowded to ex
cess, on Saturday evening last.
czt. Tolls are now collected on the
Marietta and Mount Joy turnpike.
