ter We would call the attention of
our readers to the card of " The Ameri

casion to stop at this house a few weeks
since, while i 9 that city, and pronounce
:it ono of the finest in Quakerdom. It
is immediately opposite old "Indepen

pleasant—and also very cheap, having
put the fare down t 051.50 per day—hotel.
Try its obliging managers and good fare.
Cr On Tuesday morning, Miss Grace
flubley, sister of Mrs. William Jenkins
residing in North Duke street, Lancas
ter, was fatally burned by her clothes
taking fire, whilst standing before an
open grate, and before assistance could
be had, she was enveloped in flames.—
Newton Lightner, Esq., who happened
to be passing at the time, heard i the
alarm, and rushing in, threw his overcoat
over Mies H. and succeeded in saving
her from instant death. The flames
were finally subdued by the application
of water from a small hose at hand.—
Drs. Atlee, Muhlenbtirg and Ehler were
immediately in attendance, but could be
of no avail—she died about 5 o'clock in
the evening.
sr The Washington correspondent
of the Philadelphia Press says that Mr.
Buchanan does not co coal the fact that
he is preparing to launch a thunderbolt
upon the country, either before or after
his death, in the shape of a history of
his own time, and a vindication of his
Administration. In this great.work ho
is assisted by ex-Attorney Gen. Black,
who spends most of his time in Wash
ington, and hie late private Secretary,
Adam J. Glossbrenner. Both of these
personages have paid a visit to Wheat
land ; but Mr. Glossbrenner is the most
active collectOr and compiler of the ma
terials for the forthcoming brochure.

Great Improvements in
SEWING MACHINES.
Empire Shuttle Machine
Patented February 14th, 1850
Salesroom, 510 Broadway, New York.
yr Els Machine is constructed on an entirely
new principal of mechanism, possessing
many rare and valuable improvements, having
been examined by the most profound experts,
and pronounced to be Simplicity and Per Ac
tion. Combined.
The following are the principal objections
urged against Sewing Machines :-
I.—Excessive fatigue to the operator.
2.—Liability to get out of order.
3.—Rxpense, trouble and loss of time in re
paring.
4.—lncapacity to sew every discription of
material.
s.—Disagreeable noise while in operation.
.The Empire Sewing Machine is exempt
front all these objections
It has a straight needle perpendicular ac
tion, makes the I.OOK Or SHUTTLE STITCH,
which will neither rip nor rood, and is alike
on both sides; performs perfect sewing on
every description of material, from Leather to
the finest Nansook Muslin, with cotton, linen
silk thread, from the coarsest to the finest
number.
Having neither CAM nor COG WHEEL,
and the least possible friction, it runs as smooth
as glass, and is
EMPHATItALLY A NOISELESS MACHINE!
It requires fifty per cent. less power to
drive it than any other Machine in the market.
A girl of twelve years of age can work it
steadily, without fatigue or injury to health.
Its strength and wonderful simplicity of con
struction, render it almost impossible to get
out of order, and is guaranteed by the company
to give entire satisfaction.
We respectfully invite all those who may
desire to supply themselves with a superior
article, to call and examine this unrivalled
Machine.
But in a more special manner do we solicit
the patronage of
Merchant Tailors, I Dress Makers,

Important if True.
And arery word is True
110 R upward of three vea-s past, I have
1 1 been engaged in a business, which has
yielded me at the rnto of $3,000 per annum,
but being desirous of going to Europe in the
course of a few months for the purpose of
there introducing the business, I am willing
to teach it to any one who will send me $l.
The business is no humbug, but of a highly
useful and general character adapted both to
cities and vilages, and one that any person of
ordinary capacity, young
or old, male or fe
male, can acquire with afew hours' practice,
and by which they can secure a very handsome
income. Several young ladies who have re
ceived instructions Prow me, both in New York
State and Pennsylvania, ore earning upwards
of $2O per week by it, and there is no reason
why any one else cannot do the same. Inva
lids, even, can do well by it, as it is no ped
dling affair, but a business that is per!ectly
respectable. Gentlemen and ladies of leisure
who would Int to leer the business for their
own amusement and pleasure, will find the
practice of it a pleasant pastime, and one that
they will take great interest in. On receipt
of $l, I will send printed instructions by which
any person can readily acquire the art, and
these instructions will also contain every par
ticular relative to the carrying it on so that it
will be highly profitable. The purchaser at
the " printed instructions" will also be author
ized to teach it to others; and I have some
times received as high as $2OO, for teaching it
personally to a single individual. I would
state further that $2.50 or $3.00 will buy every .
thing that is necessary to commence the busi
ness with, and the articles can be got almost
anywhere, in city or country, or, it preferre,
1 can furnish them. ADDRESS

A VALITABT
PROPOSE to cure, almost instantaneously,
I individuals afflicted with Deafness, Head
ache, Neuralgia, Chill Fever, Ague, Rheims
tism and all Sores and Pains,
I propose to check and effectually dissipate
more ache and pain, and to accomplish nearer
and more perfect equilibrium of all the circula
ting fluids in the human system, than can be
effected by any other or all other methods of
medical aid in the same space of time, the
masses themselves being judges.
I do not propose to cure every disease, but
all such as are curable by may combination of
medical appliances. My Electric Oil operates
on chemical and electric principles, sad is,
therefore, applicable to the cure or natural
restoration of any organic derangemeat, aris
ing from an improper circulation of Nes% ous
vital fluid.
I want the masses to
,lain in this matter—
the well as the sick, because if these things
are so, all are alike interested.
N. 13. Please inform me of any case of fail
ure to cure, in from half hour to three weeks,
as I wish to cure or charge nothing.
The Columbus Suri remarks: On Saturday,
an old gentleman named Wrn. C. Osborne,
well known in our city, who, from rheumatic
affections, has not been able to walk or use
his hands sufficient to feed himself, for more
then ten years, was brought to Prof. De Grath
on the street, where in the presence of a large
assemblage of people, he applied De Grath's
Electric Oil to one arm and shoulder. He was
immediately enabled to raise his hand to his
head and scratch it, a thing he said he had
not done before in twelve years.
The New Hampshire Patriot says: During
the present week, no less than six of our
friends, who have been induced to try Prof.
De Grath's Electric Oil for Rheumatism and
Deafness, in consequence of having seen this
prearation advertised in our colemns, have
called upon us to state the result of experi
ments. These persons assure us that their
Rueumatie pains have been entirely cured by
a few applications of De Grath's Electric Oil,
and they recommend its use to all who are
afflicted with any of the diseases which it is
designed to cure.
It seems that Rheumatism, Deafness, Neu
ralhia, Swollen and Still' Joints, and other
Complaints to which we are all subject, have
lost their terrors. Prof. De Grath's Electric
Oil is warranted to relieve any case in a short
space of time, and with a trifling expense. It
always cures Scratches, Sprains, Galls and
Splints on horses.
