OUR VOLUNTEERS.- The Marietta Vol
unteers returned borne on Saturday last,
They were met at the Railway Station
ty the Fire Companies and a number of
our citizens who escorted them through
the principal streets of the borough to
the front of the Donegal [louse where
they were drawn np in line and address..
ed by the Rev. A. B. Grosh, who on be
half of the citizens bade them welcome
to their home again, and invited them
to dine with their friends on Thursday at
Clark's woods where they would be hap.
py, to meet them. Accordingly on the
clay appointed our citizens mustered in
the grove upwards of a thousand strong
(some say fifteen hundred) where they
spent the afternoon right pleasantly.
The good things of the table were fur
nished by Mr. flouseal, mine host of the
Rail Road Hotel, whose catering on the
occasion gave great satisfaction. After
dinner a very excellent address was de
livered by Mr. Grosh. The musical per
formances on the occasion were well ex
ecuted, and contributed much to the en
joyment of the happy compapy.
iggr In consequence of.illness in our
family we were compelled to forego the
pleasure of being a looker-on at the pa
geat given to the Cameron Guards at
Clerk's woods on 'Fhrusday last. We
are therefore compelled to give only a
meagre account of it. In our next we
will give the very able address delivered
by Rev, Aaron B. Grosh on the occasion.

eel's Railroad Hotel. The Infantry had
just returned from their three months
enlistment.
gi t y- We see it stated that owing to
some dissatisfaction with the manner in
which the principal contractors were
conducting the work on the Columbia
and Reading Rail Road, the Board of
Directors a few days since held a meeftng
in Ephrata, and by a vote of six to five
annulled the contract. We belive the
work is to be continued; but how, and
by whom, we are unable, to say.
=I
We At noon on Monday last, about
seventyfive young men left this place
for Hagerstown, their to join the army
for three years, as teamsters. Most of
these young men have for years been
employed at our furnaces but in conse
quence of that businesi suspending op
erations, they were out of employment.
. • . . .
ibrb nuniber of persons of the Dun
ker presuasion were immersed on last
Sabbath a week in Missimer's dam, near
Mount Joy. A young man named Grosh
drove into the dam with his horse and
buggy, to get a better view. He got
out of his depth, the buggy upset, and
himself and two ladies he had with him
narrowly escaped drowning.

Marietta, August 15, 1861
Mr. Editor: May <I be permitted,
through your columns, at the request of
numerous families, to return grateful
and heartfelt thanks to the ladies and
gentlemen composing the Town Relief
Committee for their kind and attentive
ce•operation in supplying the wants of
the families of our volunteers, who so
nobly responded to their country's call.
In the perfotmance of a good work—
and especially such as has been the du
ties of said committee—it may be un
kind to particularize—nevertheless I
deem it but just to name Miss Elizabeth
E. Cassel and Miss Eliza Hopkins,
whose promptness, efficiency and true
benevolence have rendered their memo
ries imperishable.

COL. HAAIRRIGIIT'S NEW RIFLE REG'.
MENT.-Our readers are already aware
that Capt. 11. A. Llambright, late of the
First Regiment, P. V., was sometime
since appointed a Captain in the regu
lar army, and assigned to the command
of one of the companies of the new regi
ment about forming for Col. Keyes at
Fort Independence, Boston. We have
also stated that there was a generel de
sire among the numerous friends of Capt.
Hambright, that he should raise a new
volunteer regiment for the war, for the
command of which he is eminently qual
ified. We have the pleasure of being
able to state that Capt. Hambright re
turned from Washington yesterday, with
full authority from the War Depart
ment to raise a regiment of RiffeMela, to
be ready for mvehing within thirty days,
and that therefore the young men of this
city and county, who desire to serve !
their country under an officer in whom
all have the most unbounded confidence,
have now an opportunity to do so.
Col. Hambright did not get the ac
ceptanch of this regiment without some
difficulty. His abilities as an officer are
so well appreciated at Washington, that
there was an earnest and almost con
trolling desire to have him enter at Once
upon the discharge of the duty assigned
him in the regular army, connected with
the organization of the new regiment at
Fort Independence. Satisfied, howev
er, that he could render more immediate
and efficient service to his country, by
organizing a regiment of volunteers for
the war, he pressed the matter upon the
department, and finally succeeded in be
ing detached from the regular service

_
for this purpose.
Col. Hambright brought his " docu
ments " with him, and will enter at once
upon the organization of the regi•
meat. It has been accepted for three
years, or the war, to be mustered in by
companies as they are got ready, and to
be ready for marching in thirty days.—
The acceptance contains the following
provision :
" This acceptance is with the distinct
understanding that the Department will
revoke the commissions of all officers
who may be found incompetent for the
proper diedharge of their duties."
As soon as one or more companies is
ready, the men will be mustered into the
service of the United States, and sub
sisted by the Government from that
date. . Tents, clothing, arms, &c., will at
once be furnished, and a camp of instruc
tions for the regiment formed near this
city, where it will remain until ordered
into active service. One battalion will
be armed with the. Enfield Rifle, and the
other with the Sabre bayonet, and it
will be the aim of the officer command
ing, as is the desire of the War Depart.
ment ; to have this one of the best drill
ed, most thoroughly equipped, and in all
respects one of the most efficient regi
ments in the service. And none who
have seen the proficiency to which Cap
tain Hambright has brought his own
company, the Jackson Rifles, will for a
moment doubt what the character of his
new rifle'regiment will be In a very short
time after its organization.
Here, then, is h chance fox.the gallant
and patriotic sons of Old Lancaster to
rally around their country's flag under
tHir favorite officer—an officer who
earned his laurels on the hard fought
battle fields of Mexico—one whose abil
ity and courage are equalled only by his
wise discretion and courtesy. We un
derstand that Col. Hambirght has al
ready had companies enough tendered
from different parts of the State, com
posed mostly of returned three months
men, to form his regiment at once ; but
he is anxious to have as many men from
his own and adjacent counties as it is
possible to obtain within the limited
time alloted . by the War Department for
the organization. We trust there will
be a response to this call of Col. Ham
bright which will do honor to the loyal
ty and patriotism of our city and county,
and that a sufficient number of our own
men will be enrolled to give the regi
ment the character of a Lancaster count
ty organization. • .
And for the information of those de
sirous of enlisting, we deem it to be our
duty to state a fact-perhaps not general
ly known. Although we hear of many
men being recruited for various regi
ments said• to have been accepted by the
government at Washington, up to Sat
urday, last dol. Hambright's regiment was
the only one duly accepted from this State
besidesthose already in the service, and
exclusive of the - ten regiments to be fur
nished by Governor Curtin. Those,
therefore, who enlist in this regiment
will know exactly what they are doing,
can rely upon immediate subsistance,
clothing, tents, and the best arms and
equipments, with the assurance that all
the officers of the regiment will possess
the necessary qualifications to pass the
ordeal• of examination by the military
commissioners, and hence to lead their
men through honor on to victory.
Either individuals or companies desir
ous of entering this regiment should
make immediate application to Colonel
Hambright, or his authorized recruiting
officers.—Lancaster Express.

HOLLOWAY'S PILLS.
IVervouq Disorctei.s.
What is more • fearful than the breaking
down of the nervous system"! To be excites
ble or nervous in a small degree is most dis
tressing, for where can a remedy be found ?-
There is one :—Arink but little wine, beer, or
spirits, or far better, none ; take no coffee,—
weak tea being preferable; get all the fresh
air you can ; take tree or four Pills every night;
eat plenty of solids, avoiding the, use of slops ;
and if these goldon rules are followed, you
will be happy in :mind and strong in body, and
forget you have any nerves.
Mothers and Daughters
If there is one thing more than, another for
wLich these Pills are so famous it is their puri
fying prbperties, especially their power of
cleansing the blood froth all impurities, and
removing dangerous and suspended secretions.
Universally adopted as the one grand remedy
for female complaints, they never fail, never
weaken the system, and always bring about
what is rehuired.
Sick Headaches and want of Appetite
These feelings which so sadden us, most fr-e
quently arise from annoyances or trouble, from
obstructed perspiration, or from' eating and
drinking what is unfit for us, thus disordering .
the liver and stomach. These organs must be
regulated if you wish to be well. The Pills, if
taken according to the printed instructions,
will , quickly restore a healthy action. to botum
liver and stomach, whence follow as a:naturicl
consequence, a good appetite and a clear head.
In the East and West Indies scarcely any other
medicine is ever used for these disorders.
Disorders of the Kidneys
• In all diseases affecting these organs, wheth
er they secrete too much or too little water ;
or whethor they be hfflicted.with stone or gray el
or with aches and pains settled in the Joi,s
over . the regions of the kidneys, these
should be taken according to the printed direc
tions, and the Ointment should be well ruhlo-d
into the small of the back at bed time. Ta,o
treatment will give almost immediate reh.t.
when all other means have failed.
Stomachs out oforder
7, No medicine will so effectually itOprove tine
ton 6 of the stomach as these Pills • they rerno cr
all acidity, occasioned either by intemperaove
or impr.per diet.' They reach the liver
and reduce it to a healthy action ; they are
wonderfully,efficacious in case of spasin,—m
fact they never fail in curing all. disorders of
the liver and Sfoniach.
