B►The elections in Maryland for mem bers of the General Assembly, Sheriffs, Sur veyors, County Commissioners and School Commissioners takes place "on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November," Whilill will be the second day of the month. M.During the late storm Swift river, Ox- ford county, Maine, rose thirty-six feet, and caused a terrible amount of destruction of property, covering farms and sweeping away buildings. The flood has impoverished the people and rendered them homeless. On Friday night the town of Eastport was visit ed by a tremendous hurricane, smashing to atoms vessels, wharves and stores. Twenty. seven vessels in the bay were swept ashore, and two— the schooner Rio and an unknown bark—went down with nil hands on board. The towns of Grand Menan, Lubec, Pam. broke and Perry suffered heavily, and the entire loss is estimated at 83,000 000. THE AVONDALE FUND.-- The Aitteeh Chunk. Gazette says' The Posta of Direct ors of the Avondale Relief Fund met at Ply month on the twentieth of last month, and appropriated for the first year 8200 to each widow. The orphan children—male under 14 and female under 15—receive $lOO dur ing the same period. Parents or sisters who were dependent on the labor of any of the victims, aro to he paid 8200 each. The older children—boys over 14 and girls over 16 ore to receive 8300 each in quarterly in• stailtnents, and afterward nothing more.— An extra amount not to exceed $5OOO may be issued for the relief of persona not in eluded in these provisions. The drat year's expenditure, according to this plan, is ex pected to reach 840,000. The balance of the Fund is to be invested where It will yield a good interest. One-third of it will then be set apart for a widow's fund; and two thirds as an orphans' fund. When a widow marries, one half of her portion shall revert to the Widow's Fund. The families of Wil• Hams and Jones, the heroes who sacrificed their lives in the attempt to rescue their fel lows, are to share equally with those of the others. The fund is expected to reach 8200,- 000, and it is 'estimated this will'allow the proposed disbusernents to the widows for about eight years , and that the childreo will receive 8500 each upon arriving at the pes: riod when the quarterly stipends cease. CROPS OF TAB YEAR.--The report of the Department of Agriculture for August and September estimates the Yield of cotton at two million eeven tiondreci and fif ty thousand bales. There is a reduction in the crop from the Carolinas to Alabama, and a mater ial inerease from Mississippi to texas. Wheat yields bountiful returns to the farmer. The only states showing a decrease are Illinois, Niubigan, lowa, and California. The West• ern wheat is of good quality and that of the South is decidedly , superior. Corn does not make Regent" a show as other crops, It has suffered various misfortunes in all sectioes The only States that new show an average eoeditiou are Nebraska, Kansas, Florida, Inuieiana, Texas and Arkansas. It will be rather surprising news to many, to bear that there will he no material reduction in . the sugar crop of Cuba for the present sea son. The production of that stable export there, this year, is estimated at 3,318,000 boxes of 'four hundred and fifty pounds each. The molasses crop will amount to 265,000 hogsheads. Notwithstanding the distressed eundition of , the country, the go.' itual amount 'produced this year will be about neeen.eightlis of the told 'product of last year. lle..Ex.President Franklin Pierce died at his residence in ,Coneard, vr Hampshire, on Friday last, of inflamatioo of the Stain• sob, aged 65 yearn, President Arno act noctonetl the death ie an official proclam ation nod as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, ordered the Executive natl.
