The closing agony of the death of these wee will never be known as the mine bus - been thin . oughly explored, and of all those who were below the ground when the awful catastrophe occurred, got one has servived to tell the secrets of their prison house. The research es through the galleries of the mine have shown that when the last hope of communi cation with the shaft Was out off the men en . deemed to save their lives by erectiug bar riers to shut out the smoke and gas, but the effort failed. The use of the steam fan to drive fresh air down the shaft after the ea plosioo, has beep found to have been a fatal mistake, the smoke and gas being driven by it into all the passages of the mine and away from the shaft, its only method of escape:L . -- In New York and elsewhere liberal subscrip tions are Loin made for the relief of the widows and orphans of the dead, and a very large sum will undoubtedly.be raised. The miners are reported as firm , in their deter mination to refuse again to enter a mine with but ono shaft and no other means of escape, and their resolution ought to have the effort of compelling the necessary improvements in all the miues. STEALING FRUIT.-N otwithstandinß, the severe penalty which the law imposes for the offense of fruit waling there are those in our midst who engage in this species of Petty pilfering with impunity. Among others, whose enclosures have recently bean entered and their peach trees stripped of their fruit, is the Rev. Mr. DeMoyer, Pastor of the M. E. Church. During several evenings last week some parties who bad neither fear of the law nor the minister before Jheir eyes entered his lot and appropriated to their use a large quantity of his choicest fruit. About the same time a raid was made on the peach trees of Dr. E. A Herring, J. P. Wolff,- an others. As plenty as fruit is this Beason we would have supposed such risks on the part of rogues would have been avoided. The pripe certainly does not justify such hazard ous undertakings. Othcrs have expressed a determination to enforce the law , against parties who may .in the, future be caught thus tresspassiog upon their premises. An example or two would doubtless have the effect to zeoure the public against snob dep. redations. HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITION. The Second Exhibition of the Fret*lin . HISTORY OF PENNSYLVANIA.—It is with more than ordinary pleasure that w© call at= Mutton to Sypher's School Histery of Perm sylvania. It treats of the first settlement of this State, and all notable events subse quent, down to the present time. It is the first history of this State of a suitable style and kind for use in the school and family. It is clear and concise in its statements, and the writer throws a great deal of interest into every page. The chapters entitled "Early settlements on the Delaware," and "German and Welsh settlements," are es pecially entertaining and worth far more than the price of tho book. We earnestly call the attention of School Directors, Teach• ere and parents to examine this book, which can be seen at the store of Reid & Way nant. At the first meetings of the Dirac• tors of this borough and township we insist they should adopt this as one of the text books. Let them bear this in mind that there is not a history of Pennsylvania in the schools of the Sptte, and it is time our chil dren should know something of the settle ment and developement of this common wealth. Let every person wanting a useful and readable book get a copy. Mr. D. D.
