Pottery fmm Enq'and That Mystified and Amused Miisukeeana. An array of curious yellow dishe, with quaint, rc rncsy tnotloes in un fnmlllRr ilinlort, has iieen the centro of attraction In tiie window of a chin tore on Milwaukee street for the iHRt few days, and many persons have step ped to spell out the sdnges and to wonder where the curious stuff ram from. A few are familiar with it, but tno9t porsnns are unaware that the "Alter Vale" ware, as It is called comes from Newton Abbot. In Devon shire, Knfiland and that the mottoes are In the Devonshire dlnlert. New ton Abbot Is about twenty miles from Exeter and the pottery is an old one. The ware Is a peculiarly rich, (loop, yellow faience, with simple but effec tive decoration In dark green and a deep brown-red, and the shapes are delightfully quaint. A crenm lug bears the Inscription, "Demshlre Cralm. Tak and try et." A squat, comfortable tenpot holds fortll tl hospitable Invitation, "Du ee niak yer rel at 'omt," and another says, "We all tt3 be mnln g!ad to isee ee." An other cream Jug has the gratifying as surance "Dnwn't ee be 'fraid a'ut. There's plainly more." Doubtless originally Hie mottoes on the dishes were all In the Devonshire, hut with the march of progress some hackneyed English adigcs are seen, and some Scotch. A cream Jug with the warning, "He canny wi' the cream," "is characteristically Bcotrh, but the sugar liowl is more generous, and says, "Help yerself and Uinna be biate." Several of the "Devonshire dishes," as the deep bowls of various shapes are called, bear Burns's well-known grace traced within: . Some hae ment and canna eat, Some hae nae meat and want It; But we hae meat and we can eat. And ro the Lord be tlmnkit. An eminent Congregational divine of Milwaukee strolling past the china store window saw the queer pottery and wandered In. He was much struck with the bowls bearing this grace of Hums, and remarked thoughtfully to the storekeeper: "Now, If I were to buy one of these dishes for each of my family. I should think I might thereby be relieved from the duty of saying grace three times a day." Resides the bowls and cream Jugs and teapots, there are fat posset cups and tall "tygs," as the three-handled cups, something like a loving cup, are called. Milwaukee Evening Wiscon sin. The democratic dark horses are a little shy of fodder. With them it is something like oattle on the western range in winter. Snow oovers the ground, there is nothing much to eat but a few twigs and tree bark aud it is a long look ahead to spring sunshine and green Holds. Some succumb to starvation and the cold and never see those bright Elysian fields except in their minds eyes. It might be suggested that our democratic friends should not be too enthusiastic over the republican fao tional trouble in Wisconsin. Elec tion figures for some years Indicate that there are plenty of republicans up In that neck of the woods to make two ropublioau parties, either one of whioh could wipe out the for lorn little Wisconsin democraoy. Sinoe Editor Watterson doolares his willingness to undertake anv labor for the decaocratio party wnv not delegate to him the pleasurable duty of uniting the Honorable G. Cleveland and the Honorable W. Bryan with bread and sympathetic bonds of eternal and reciprocal friendship. The members of the Boston anti- imperialist league who visit the world a fair and find themselves in a moment transported to the far Philippine Isles will observe that contrary to their expectations there are a number of the Filipinos who donot resemble Georgo Washington. The report regarding that Ohio man who tried to resign an office because he did not think he was sufficiently well educated to hold it down has been exploded as a canard due to lack of far eastern war news at the time of its inception. Raising Dishrags A novel enterprise, that of raising dishrags, is bring exploited by n number of Southern California hor ticulturists, who rocolvod the inspi ration for the soheme from Charles Richardson, whose gardens in Pasa dena are becoming famous for their remarkable productions. Mr. Rich ardson has successfully raised many growths new to American soil, and this year is excooding all his previous triumphs by raising thonsanda of dishrags. Last ybar Mr. Richardson's string beans, which measured forty-three inches in length, created a stir, but dishrag vines, which, with their pendant dishrags twine about orange trees, palms, evergreens and peach trees, and peek in at the two story windows, bid fair to win the ohamplonshlp from the beans. These dishrags, or vegetable sponges, as they are sometimes called, are indigenous to Africa, but now it has been demonstrated that they will thrive in thisoountry they are bound to become a popular pro duction. The graceful, well foliaged vines are not only ornamental, but thev bear in profusion a fibrous snonge that is eminently useful for. bathing as well as for soourine nans and kettles. Imagine picking dishrags in one's garden just as one would pick blackberries, or imagine having vines all laden with dishrags clam bering over one's kitchen windows so that all one neods to do is to stretch out an arm and pull one in Such an arrangement would be much ensior than going to the rag bag or buying dishrags at stores. These ourions vegetables assume the form aud appearance of cuonm hers, and hang on the vines until their green ooata become brown aud dry like parohment. At this stage they are ready to harvest. After they are picked the brown coat is removed, and an extremely strong and compact fibrous sponge is re- vealed. Through the centre of this sponge, in three lengthwise com partments, are many black seeds whioh shake out easily. In the Pasadena garden these sponges have avoragod eight inches in length. In 1900 the farmers were pros perous and farm prices were good. Populism squeaked a few times at,d died and the calamity ories of the democrats were nnable to make any serious inroads to the republican phalanx despite their cries of im perialism, impending downfall of the constitution and American liberty, and such like. The situation has not materially changed. The country is still prosperous, money is plenty and prices are good ; the republican party has kept faith with the people, the administration has been alert and resourceful, its in ternal policy has been wise and beneficial, its foreign policy has been strong and has elevated the nation among the world powers, it has been unhesitating in its drastio course toward dishonest publio of ficials, and the coming campaign will soon demonstrate that It is useless to go up against solid, sub stantial facts genuine prosperity, good prices and actual contentment with any calamity howls and danger cries, however vootferoas or im passioned.
