About 0(10,001) will be expended for schools in this state during the years of l!io3 I, and that f 00,000 will be avail able for the support of the schools in Sussex county. We have, he ways, 97 different school houses, of which, 10 are ol brick, 81 of wood and 8 are of stone, the whole being valued at 15-1,00(1. There are 145 teachers, and of that number 81 are males and 111 females. Eight are college grad uates, f!2 normal graduates, 3 hold first grade, 22 second grade and 6 hold third grade state certificates. 17 hold second grade and 37 third grade county ceitillcates. Walpaek and Sandyston pay the lowest average of salary, and also have lowest percent age of attendance. As a whole the schools of the county are in a flourish ing condition. The trial of George Jager for the alleged shooting of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Devau has been set for Jan. lllh. Theodore SimoiiHon and SenaH tor L. J. Martin have been assigned as counsel for Mr. Jager. A struck jury will be called to try this case. It is expected that a surveyor with a compass can run a straight line, but in going over the new road over along the liig Flatbrook I found more crooks and curves than straight lines. Had the road been located 75 yards farther up the hill the road would been much better, Is the opinion of many. The shortest day and longest nights are past, but the lengthening of the day will not be perceivable for some time to come. The cold weather continues and on Saturday morning the Weather Rureau thermometer registered 13 below zero. That might be called genuine winter weather. Newton 19 well blessed with hotels, having seven, the last one to be opeued wa9 that of A. U. Rrlckner on Spring street. No one need go dry, if they have the price there. The new . store of Wash Depne, building In Rranchville, will be ready for occupancy by Jan. 15. Whether Wash will move and occupy it-at that date 1 do not know, but they will find Wash a hustler when he gets there. Another veteran has answered the last roll call. I refer to the death of Comrade William Nyce of the Harris Light or 2nd N. Y. Cav. I frequent ly met Comrade Nyce when visiting his regiment, as our commands were often close together during the war, and did know he was living until I saw the announcement of his death in your last issue. According to the I'enn'a fisliing-through-the-ice law our Jersey fisher men must take care, or they may get into trouble, as our fishermen fre quently visit the I'lke county ponds during the ice season. Sunday was a very disagreeable day the ruin continuing steadily all day. 1 02-100 inches fell during the day, and today (Monday) the roads are a glare of ice. The matter of whether Mr. Ful bonm of Rranchville will run the Revans creamery for the ensuing year is not definitely settled yet. The meeting of patrons and directors on Saturday last gave no results either way. The stolen revolver and horse blanket have been returned to their respective owners and all is "quiet on the l'otonmc" once more. Charles Person expects to engage in the ment business next spring, and if he can secure a proper loca tion will have a shop in town besides running a. wagon. Mr. Rarto, the Erie passenger agent, is right when he suggests that those intending to keep summer boarders should pay more attention to the general conveniences and especially to cooking. Good healthy stomachs make people cheerful and happy. J.f a community spends money to pay salaries of ministers who are presumed to do good In the world and save souls would H not pay to establish cooking school : to save the bodies We have singing schools ard other societies but when it comes to one of the most Import ant matters, that of preserving health and so fitting people to enjoy the other comforts of life, we neglect it as a community. This is a very important phase in the health and prosperity ot any place and particu larly in a section to which summer guest are invited. Martha North, accompanied by Miss Marie Rigny, sailed from New York recontly for Jacksonville, Florida They will go to St. Augus tine for tho winter. Wm. A number of our oitizeris attended the lecture at the Crfsino Friday evening, and report it very good. Matamoras schools closed Thurs day afternoon for Christmas vaca tion. Christmas exercises in Epworth and also Hope church were held Thursday evening. Pleasing pro grams were rendered by the children who had likewise a fine treat. Mrs. Lucinda Valentine, whose obituary appears elsewhere, was a member of the Epworth M. E church and led a devoted Christian life. Despite her advanced age she attended divine service Bunday, Deo. 6th, little more than a week prior to her death. Miss Sadie Sly of Middletown recently spent a few days with her friend, Mabel Walker, Funeral services over the remains of the late Lucinda Valentine were held Monday by Rev. O. J. Shoop, her pastor, who spoke fervently of her character. The floral tributes were chaste and beautiful. Two favorite .-hyinns of the deceased, "Some day the Silver Chords will Break" and "Looking this Way," were sung by Mrs. Shoop and Miss Cura liillmiwi. The pall bearers were Messrs. J. W. It Is now untlerstood that Mr. Hanna simply took that annoying presidential boom, and just as the severe weather was coming on hung it out at the window over night by the hind legs. There are still some eastern papers which decline to consider Mr. Cleve land's refusal as Anal. What a sight it would be for the gods your Uncle Grover and your Uncle Mark simul taneously pitching unwelcome, presi dential boomers out of fifth story windows. They do say that since Mr. Bryan's elimination and Mr. Cleveland's with drawal there is still the same chance of victory for the democratic party. Missouri is still further adding to her notoriety as a boodle state by handing down supreme court deci sions which would scarce do credit to ancient Gaul. The" number of votes that the democrats are not making for them selves at the next election, Dy their purile, unseemly but familiar opposi tion to everything Is a large quantity. It Is understood that Mr. Bryan has made a great Impression at Mos cow. The first impression that this statesman made on a great many Americans was favorable. It has again reached the "grave" stage in the Russo-Jap affair. This will be followed shortly by the "critical" degree of tension, then by the "crisis" mark and after that will come the "more hopeful" period. It is announced that President Castro has purchased 15,000 magazine rifles and a few tons of ammuniti on, presumably to test the arbitration idea. A Namesake. ' "He's a namesake of mine."
