Harvest Is about over and the general opinion is that the yield will not be up to the average. Haying Is going ahead with a rush and In spite of the severe drought in early summer the crop will be a fairly good one. Corn does not look a promising yield and will be tbe weediest crop grown in this section in many years. I iiear a great (leal of grumbling about the building of so many small bridges in this town. Our taxes will lie something that will make the taxpayer swear, and the building of so many sluice bridges helps pile up the taxes, while many bridges are totally unnecesary. Mr. W'hiUier, wife and children passed through Jjiylon Saturday en route for l'latlnookviile on a pleasure trip. Mr. Whittier Is engaged in business in Newark and his family Is summering at IJranchville. Last summer they boarded at Layton and made many warm friends here. The farm buildings on the farm of J. J. Vansickle are the best painted set of buildings in this valley. Paint ed white, with red and green trim tilings they present a handsome appearance, W. 0. Hursh and Uus liest ilid the work. There tire two poor paymasters; one who never pays and the one laying before hand. The latter was duly exemplified the past week. Samuel Swartwout anil Knos John son, two aged colored men, ate stay ing at Sirs. Clara Tuckers for an indefinite period. They are inmates of the county alms house and being very infirm are permitted this outing. ISotli have lived here almost all their lives and everybody has a kind word for the old men whose journey of life is almost ended. The Beemerville and Ilainesville base ball clubs pfayed again at Ilainesville Saturday last. The score at the close of the game stood 20 to 28 in favor of the lieenierville club. If the Greater New Yorks or Chicagos could pile up runs like that they could capture the pennant sure. Jacob Vansickle and wife and Charles Itainor of ISueyrus, Ohio, are stopping at the club house at Ilevans and Jake is giving his Ohio friends the time of their lives. With excur sions and fishing they are passing the time until Aug 5 when Jacob will return to Ohio. Mr. Anson, P. Kospnkrans of Still water, this county, passed last week with his son Elijah at Eayton. Mr. Hosetikrans formerly resided here and despite his 80 odd years is just as erect and active as many men of half his years. Talk about hard times when one can get rich lor a half dollar or less and if he happens to get too rich be laid away until the effects have passed off and he is as poor as ever. Sometimes one gets so rich that he becomes abusive and he goes out of the bar room end over end and gets up madder than a wet hen. No such thing as hard times here. As Henry Ellett was driving along the road near lievans Saturday night he came in collision with James Clifford who was driving in the opposite direction. Elletts horse got hwiiv, and beyond slight damages to his wagon he went home. The contractors building the new road propose putting on a stronger force of Italians this week. I am afraid snow will fly before that road is lit for driving. Mrs. Lizzie Drake of New York, a sister of Mrs. C. I:. McCracken of LayUm, is spending a few days with her sister here. The loose stone in our roads are entirely too numerous for the comfort of the traveling public, but our over seers of read are very busy will do for an excuse. 1 wonder what excuse II. Tl ere were two storms that afternoon, each accompanied by hail, but the first was the one which de stroyed growing crops and the latter which overthrew buildings and up- roofed trees, Alonzo Cron lost hi entire crop of buckwheat, Nathan Emery lost his corn and buckwheat rops, as did Henry 15. Van Auken also. The damage at Ardtornish is estimated at $"( in tH a garden alone, we hear. Many gardens were in a manner ruined. Trees In great num bers were blown down at Joseph Canne's, Gabriel Crone's and II. 1!. Van A u ken's. I was with a company of Indies and gentlemen Inst Monday in quest of huckleberries. After searching for berries without much success for a time one of the party, Calvin Cron, stepped on a huge black rattlesnake and narrowly escaped being bitten. The snake was dispatched by David Cron. About ten minutes later David ran on two large yellow rattlesnakes and killed them both. The desire for berries seemed to have waned and the party jlrove home. Calvin Cron's little daughter Lenah by selling soap orders for a certain firm secured a fine writing desk which she presented to her father. Some time since she secured a set of nice window curtains and a rocking chair which she gave to her mother and father respectively.
