The citizens of Matanioras have organized a board of health, Borne- thing that has been needed in the village for some time. The 15 cent tea held at the home of Mrs. Fred Wickham and Mrs. E. J . Lonce, on Tuesday evening, was well attended and a very pleasant program was rendered. Various gumes were played and prizes award ed. A neat sum was realized and all had a pleasant time. A number of our citizens attended court at Milford, Pa., this week. Ground was broken this week on the grounds of St. Joseph's church on Division street for a new rectory. A number of our young people gathered at the home of Charles Singer last Wednesday evening to celebrate his eldest daughter, Helen's, birthday. A most pleasant evening was spent by all present, and as all dispersed to their several homes they agreed that it was one of the most ploasant parties hold in our neighborhood in some time. Conrad Guruble, Jr., had the mis fortune to have one of his cows slip on the ice one day last week. Altho assistance arrived as soon as pos sible the cow sustained such injuries that he was obliged to kill her. Some of our young ladies are not afraid to "sit down" on the small pox. Why? Because they have been vaccinated. Some of our neighbors are assist ing, under the direction of Manager Robert Smith, in erecting the new telephone line to Big Pond and expect to have it in working order in a short time. The county commissioners were here last week to view the Cona shaogh bridge and are contemplat ing raising the side walls three feet which are now not more than six inches higher than the road bed. It would be well to build them six feet higher so that Mr Schreiber, the supervisor, who is now taking down the hill, could fill in and so greatly ease the grade. A new railing along Cave Bank would be In order as the old one ia very unsafe. Town meeting was a very tame affair as no oflleial of any importance, with the exception of assessor, was to 1)6 voted for. Everything passed ofl quietly. By the way our physicians are kept on the go, sickness cannot be diminishing. However there Is very little sickness in and about Layton. Mre. The recent fire on the Burtis proerty near Brtmcliville makes the fourth mysterious fire in that vicinity. No one was in the Burtis house that ight, when it burned, and that it was set on fire is believed by all. In the latter part of January a party in and around Layton secured petition blank for sucker fishing. It had to be endorsed by prominent men that he would keep suckers and carp only. On Feb. 2 it was sent to H. P. Frothingham, fish commis sioner of N. J., endorsed bv Sen Martin, Member of Assembly 1 1 i fT. 'rosecutor of Pleas Huston, and Pennsylvania Clerk Simpson. That permit has not come yet, and we are getting awful hungry for a mess of suckers. Elijah Lundy had the misfortune to cut off one of the middle toes on his right foot one day last week. He was working on his woodpile at the time. According to the Guard, a paper published at Shelbyville, Mo., a law- was passed a day or two ago which makes it unlawful for any person to sell, offer for sale or give away, or have in their possession for distribu tion any cigarette, cigarette paper or wrapper.
