PIGEONS THE PEST OF VIENNA llftve Multiplied from Frw Pairs In One Hnndred Tenrn Rrronil All Control. The few pairs of pipeons brought 100 ytars nro fr(im Venice to Vienna have multiplied to such an amazing extent as to have become a public pest. There is great difficulty in exterminating these pretty creatures, as, besides the danger involved 1o the public in shoot ing them, many of the birds would per haps only be wounded. The town cotiueil has, therefore, resolved that as runny as possible shall be caught alive, killed and given to poor families, and that for Borne years fresh eggs in equal numbers shall be abstracted from the nests. The birds, which are great favorites with the cabmen and porters, are fed s regularly as the horses, clouds of pigeons descending at the first throw of corn. Hundreds of birds await an eccentric woman who appears every day iu the town park In summer and winter with food for them. In the winter she brings warm linseed meal and other food, and they descend at her call. She is closely veiled and her name is unknown. The habitues of the park have dubbed her the "Baroness." Hue wept upon being told by a park keeper that the pigeons were to be caught and killed, savs the New York Mail and Express, and great dissatis faction is also expressed bythe cab men. FRUIT IS A GOOD MEDICINE. Authorities Sr That Disease Is Both Prevented and Cared by Free IndulM-enee. It has not been a secret of the med leal profession that the eatingof fresh fruits is one of the most healthful of habits. As a cure It Is both simple and agreeable. Fruits are divided into five classes the astringent, the mealy, the oily, the acid and sweet. Each has an es pecial value. The grape Is' the king cure of all fruits, and Is recommended particu larly to the consumptive, the anaemic and the dyspeptic; also for gout and all liver complaints. The prescription in each case Is very simple, varying of course according to the complaint. To begin w'ttthe pa tient consumes from a half to a pound and a half of grapes daily, increasing gradually to nine or ten pounds. This diet is to be continued utitil the pa tient's health show s a general improve ment. . To the sweet fruits a special hygienic virtue Is ascribed, particularly to the plum, as a remedy in articular rheuma tism or preventive to gout. The acid class, which Includes rasp berries, strawberries, peaches, apples gooseberries, cherries, lemons and oranges, stands at the head of the list. All these fruits are prescribed fur stomach troubles. IS FRIEND OF BIRDS. TZ llllloaatre Colorado Mtner Allows none Killed on His Mlnlnc Jftroperty. Thomas F. Walsh, of Washington, who is owner of the "Camp llird" mine in Colorado, gives evidence in the naming of this marvelously rich jiece of gold-producing property of km tender-heartedness so far as birds and harmless beasts are concerned. Not only has he named his mine after the pest of his early prospecting days, but all along the road leading from the mine to the quartz mill are posted notices which read: "Notice I'inls and harmless beast must not be killed on this property. It is cruel, also it is aguinnt the law. Any employe of the Camp llird mine needlessly killing or cruelly treating any bird or animal will be dis- euuryed." "Cuntp birds' are Mr. WaUh'a spe cial favurits. EXPENSIVE ELECTIONS. It Costs the City of New York Aliont fl.lt for Fnih Vote (ait for Mayor. It costs the city of New York $1.11 and some fractions of a cent for every vote cast at a mayoralty dec tion. That is the monev actually ex pended by the bureau of elections for the Greater New York in rent ol booths, places for the board of regis try to sit, polling places, and the gm eral expenses incidental to the collect ing- of votes of the greater city. Alto gemer atwn.uuu or thereabout was spent by the bureau of elections In de fraying the coBt of the last mayoralty campaign, and- there is no reason to suppose that the figures will show moderate change in this election, says an exchange of that city. Of that amount 350.000 was expended for clerk hire alone. For rent of places for the board of registry to sit, polling booths, cartage, and the repairs of the electron appurtenances $lM.Utlo was paid; $35,01)0 was spent for the print ing of the ballots and books for regis tering; $85,000 went for advertising the official nominations and the various other matters Incidental to the elec tion regulated by state, county and city laws; $75,000 was spent in miscel laneous rent hire, for extra help, and the thousand and one things that be come necessary two or three weeks preceding election day. This sum of $076,000, divided by the number of the actual votes cast, makes the cost about $1.11 a vote. They Won't Be Fooled.
