Whnt is known as the trolley franchise grub which pnssod the lust legislature in now beinp; nirert In the rUilndclphiit pniiors. It was con demned at the time ns a gittnntic stenl and when Wtinnmaker otlored two and ft linlf million dollars for the franchise he was ridiculed as making it for political effact. Re cent developments seem to show that the scheme was, as its opponents de clared, one to blackmail the Traction company of Philadelphia and that there was no intention of building competing lines. The Inquirer con demns the sale of the franchise, now being made through, ono, Mack, to the Traction company in strong terms and characterizes the whole job as A conspiracy to wrong the people. That paper has heretofore refrained from such criticism but probably its eyes are now opened. The president, by refusing to en tertain the Schley appeal, leaves the matter where tWb naval board did by its findings. Every lntelll gent reader of the accounts of the battle of Santiago formed an opinion as to who was de serving of credit for the conduct of that fight and probably that opinion remains practically unchanged. No good can oome to either aspirant by prolonging the controversy. The election roturns from Porter were looked on with asknnoe by the officials in tho court houso as it had been rumored that smallpox existed there not long ngo. To make as euranee doubly sure they were thor oughly fumigated before being han died and fhiH may have been a wiHe precaution. We don't want even a suspicion of the disease in the town. The upnoaval in Pittsburg may liavo a serious effect on the state elections next, fall, Various predic tions are made now as to its bearing on the cnudidiicy for governor of Home seekers after the nomination and it may cause ft reforming of po litical lines. Keeping the sidewalks passable this week has bean a practical im possibility but several with com mendablo promptness tackled the job as soon as the wind abated, and Home did not. Road Will Come. The Sussex Register says tho re cent announcement by the Trenton Gazette, which was reprinted in the Register, that an electric road was coming this way, lias been received with sarcasm in some quarters as a road 011 pa pur The Gazette replies : "The State Gazette announced lust May that there would be an electric road ff"in Tnoiton to Port Jervis ltl.iii the Pennsylvania sidis of the river within rlvn yea -s but at the ri--nt time it would seem that much less than five years will elapse before sucli 1 ( bin ' bi'C' inics a reality .
