The shad fishery at Depue's fish
ery started to haul in the shad the
past week. The recent rains raised
the river too high for successful fish
ing but this week the river will he
just right, barring rains. Th" catches
so far have not been very good, the
"pink-eye" being the majority of
tho fish caught.
Arbor Day was duly observed ba
ilie schools of this town, and In some
cases trees were planted, anil in oth
ers, recitations were given. The
trouble altout tree planting lies in
the fact that all of the school grounds
nre so small that there is no room for
them. It would be a good idea for
the Hoard of relocation to enlarge
the grounds, and then set it out with
trees. As it Is now, Arbor Day does
not create much enthusiasm in the
pupils' minds, bo far as tree planting
is concerned.
(iarden making Is nil the go, Just
now, and the question, "Have you
made your garden?" is on every
one's lips. Many have had their
gardens partially made for some
time, but the light frost of Monday
morning is a caution to go slow In
the garden line.
The timber tract recently bought
by Mitchell and (,'ondict near Tuttles
Comer gives a good deal of work to
the laborers in this locality. This
makes help on the farm very hard to
get, the men claiming they can make
better wages getting out ties, etc.
The young trout now hatched at
the I'latbrook Fish Club's pomls
number about 50,000. Hen Rosen

usually small, anil that the young
fry will soon be placed In boxes In
the stream out-of-doors.
Every once in a while the New

there was a smash-up on the D., L.

the reason why our dailies fail to
come on time.

Farmers were much delayed by
the heavy rain of Thursday night in
getting their oats in, but all will fin
ish them by the middle of this week.
The work on the farm is much' be

in consequence of wet weather.

A majority, I might say all with
perhaps one exception, of our schools
will close from the middle on to the
last of May. This will make a pret
ty long vacation, and I think it
would be a benefit to the pupils to
lengthen the school year to at least
9J months; 10 months is a little to
much of a good thing.
