J, H. Van Etten, PUBLISHER, Milford, Pike County, Pa. A GENEROUS GIFT. Andrew Carnegie hns offered Port Jorvia 20,000 for a new Library building, provided tho town will furnish a site and pledge ;i,000 h vear for its maintenance. Tlii places our neighbor in a very envi able position and already steps have been taken to geonre the munificent donation. Under the act of 1895 school directors are authorized to es tablish free pnblio libraries in school districts, to set aside buildings for that purpose and to levy a tax tc to maintain it, and to receive gift endowments etc., free from tax for these purposes. Why should not some effort be made to see if the generous philanthropist will make an offer to Milford. There is now a good nucleus in the way of books and if a suitable room could be pro Tided the library could easily be maintained at a very small cost to taxpayers. We suggest that our school directors call a meeting "of citizens to confer with them and that steos be taken to see what can be done in this direction. The ef fort will cost nothing and good re eults may easily be attained. It is intimated that the present library may be closed after April first when the lease on tne building expires, be cause there is not suffioent support to pay rent and for care. If how ever the building could be secured means no doubt, could be provided for enrront expenses. Let us make the effort and see what can be done RAILROAD TALK. With the spring time and the blue birds and the wild geese flying northward comes to ns the periodical talk of a railway up the valley. It is now said that a party of Eiiston gentlemen headed by Dr. J. H. Shull of Stroudsburg, has secured nearly all the right of way to Bushkill for a road to be operated by steam and electrioity, and that it will be built the coming season. "Hope springs eternal in the human breast" and again the leeling comes over as that there is a possibility that we- may yet see the cars gliding through this valley. How many of our school children, or for that matter those of larger growth, can repeat the National hymn without stumbling. In olden times one of the exerei.ses in day schools, and also in Sunday Bchools, was to have pupils commit verses from the Bible and also hymns. In this manner they became familiar with the most well known and pop. nlar hymns and many could repeat a large number of them. These customs seem to have fallen, to a large extent into disuse. The bene fit was not ooly to have children familiar with the hymns most com monly sung but the practice also greatly strengthened the memory and aided in committing more read- The Ilouse, after reducing the amount from $100 to $50 a month, ptsHed the Semite bill granting a jH'tiukm to the widow of the late ien. Remember the mns'cal ; and the lecture by Mr. Mackenzie, March twelfth. J. O. Scudder, a brother of the writer, arrived in town last Friday and enjoyed a brief stny. A very enjoyable syicial hour was spent with the memiiers of the choir at the parsonage, last Saturday evening. On Tuesday evening tlie members of the Epworth League gave an en tertainment in the interest of socia bility in the basement of the church The invitation was general and the attendance good. It, does us good once in a while to come to the gath erings at the church and nor feel bound to bring our pocket books along. If sociability could be di vorced from the money idea, there would be more of it. Let no one interpiet this, however, in favor of stinginess. We enjoyed our supper given by the "Hatchet Society," very much indeed. This was u time when money and sociability went togeth er admirably. Wo shall look for ward with delight to the return of Washington's birthday. At the social Tuesday night the following program was carried out. Harry Armstrong entertained us with his graphophone. Sohis were sung by Miss MyrthiRyder, Miss Lilly Buchanan, Mrs. Bonrniju, aed the Pastor Miss Bessie Arm strong and Miss Lila Rrinati favored us with recitations.
