The) crnsti In in Philiilelphtu against policy selling and the invest igation by Juilgo Finletter in which it was shown that school children habitually bought policy mny have tha effect of informing the police departmont of that model city that there aro such iniquities in existence It was not shown by legal proof that the officere connivced nt the evil or prevented prosecutions, but what is a police force for if not to ferret out crime and arrest offenders, and if officials are not able to d ) so it is time there was an overhauling. The public will not exonerate of ficers of the law because it cannot be positively shown by direct proof that they are culpable. The very foct that such things cannot be prov en only shows their adopts in shirk ing their duty without being caught. AUDITORS FEES. Notice is given that an act will be introduced in the legislature to re peal the special Act of 1805 for Pike Co. so far as it fixes the fees of Aud itors. That act f ives the county Auditors 3 n day for 8 days and for all time spent over 8 days the com pensation now allowed by law which by the act oi 1864 is $2 a day. The repeal of the act of 1865 will fix the compensation according to the act of 1887 which allows $3 a day and 6 cents per mile circular from and to their houses once for every vweek whilo so employed This will inorease the compensation considerably. Senators and Representatives who have called at the White House in the interests of constituents ' who seek commissions in the Army, un dor the Re-organization Act, have beon very plainly informed by the President that so far as it is possi ble to do so, these appointments will ba given to the officers and men who have served with the volun teers in the Philippines This posi tiou is such a just one that nobody has uttored one word of protest against it. Before giving up his seat to Sena tor Clnpp, elected by the Republican Legislature of Minnesota to succeed the lute Senator Davis, Senator Towno, the Demo-pop, who hald the seat a few weeks by gubernatorial appointment, made a p ilitical speech in which all the U :is condemned by the majority of the voters in the lute campaign, were exploited. A resolution for the independence of the Philippines was made the text for the wail of woe. In sentencing McAllister, Campbell and Death to thirty years in the pententiary and Kerr to fifteen for their connection with the death of Jennie Boncheiter in Paterstm Judge Dixon only meted out justice. Such scoundrels ure safer within prison walls mid soeioty breathes easier to know it. Besides such sentences limy deter other evil doers. The ditliculty experienced in sev eral states and the scandals connect ed with the election of United Htatos Senators should go fur toward changing the methods of their holection. We are gl nl to le irn that H.irry Do Witt is do.ng nieely nfter the sue. cesssul amputation of his foot. A letter received on Monday was full of cheer, and closed with this very striking testimony, "All is well with my soul." This is the kind of evidence that counts for more than a cart load of theory in estab lishing the christian religion. We will not cease to pray that sustaining-grace be givon to him and that his recovery be speedy and com plete. The grip has kept a large number of people busy for the last few weeks. Fourteen out of the fit'teen homos at which calls were made. last Monday, were afllieted wii'b that iinspo ikahle grip. V7 hope that the parishioners who ave ill ill let us know about it before they re cover that no ono who needs a pas tornl call may bo neglected. These times of universal sickness remind us that this-earth is not al ways our friend. Let us see to it that we make preparation, not for this only, but for the next also, by daily companionship with the "Friend of friends." The pastor is enjoying a long looked for visit from his parents. They came last Saturday and expect to remain about a month. We are glad to welcome them to Milford. There are many things about this place that make it indeed a paranise.
