"If there is any one who lielieves tlie Uuld tttiUHluril Is U gmxl tiling, or tlmt It niUHt be inulnttiiiH'd, I warn him not to cant his vote for me, be cause I promise him it will not be maintained in this country longer than I am able to get rid of it." This language was used by Hon. William Jennings llryan in a speech at Knoxvill, Tenn., on Sept. 1G, 180U, It will be noticed that Mr. Uryan does not want the vote or "any one who believes the Gold Standard is a good tiling." Can any one believe otherwise after witnessing our sound business and financial prosperity since the Gold Standard law has been en acted? Mr. Bryan niado a "promise" to the American voters that the Gold Standard law "will not be malntain- tained in this country longer than am (he is) able to get rid of it." The election of Mr. Bryan to the Presl dency would, therefore, be Immedi ately followed by attacks upon the financial integrity of the United States and of every individual citl on. The result would be a repeti tion of the business panic ami disas ter that we experienced during the last democratic administration. There are several strings to Mr. Bryan's nomination bow, but none of them will stand the November strain. Owing to the backwardness of the country in responding to the Demo cratic appeals to start a fire in the rear of the American soldiers in the Held, Mr. Bryan may have to do a little more paramountiug before the end of the campaign. The leading German-American cit izens are vigorously resenting th e Democratic notion that they are an tognistic to the government. The Ge rman voter is for stability in all th ings and at all times. Chairman Jones insists that it Is not the square thing to discuss his round cotton bale trust. Ho far Mr. Bryan has had the greatest difficulty with those mem bers of his audiences who insist up on him explaining his predictions of four years ago. It is a mistake to assume that Mr. Bryan has not gained anything by Ids utterances on "imperialism." His reputation for trick politics has been added to materially. The Democratic malingers are said to haveuoticed no particular demand, as yet, for 10 to 1 literature- Every one understands a I J about that question. The Demoerntio workors think that if. is vnry pretty toroenlve pict ures of Mr Bryan oiling the farm wagon, hut. they would rather know jnwf. how Mr. Jones looks greasing the Wilson. The Dmnocnicts are staggering n nsnal under a multiplicity of issues that do not. fit all parts of tlio coun try. They cannot talk free silver in tho Fust, they dare not pess anti- expansion in tho West, they foar to dwell on free trade in tho manufac turing districts, and the "consent of the governed" is an expression non grnla in tho rxmth. The pessimistic prediction!! of the prnpiietor calamity, so irooiy pro nlitinmrt in IHSId, have been disprovon by the experiences of tho iiit two years. His foresight was bad. This year his prophesies apnea! to history for confirmation, hnt. tho facts of history show that his hindsight is no bettor than his foresight. If there were really any danger of empiro there would bo no Democrat ic, Republican, Populist or Prohibi tion party. Tariff, silver, whisky and everything else would be fnr- gotten and the entire nation would rise as one man and put it down. The charge of militarism made by tho Democratic candidate for Presi- lency is au insult to every Ameri can soldier serving under tho flag. All soldiers, whether regulars. volunteers or in f ho militia, are vol unteers. They have entered the service of their own free will and accord. None were drafted. If free silver is dead Mr. Bryan should not dislike the Republican party fcr killing it, as he has been making lots of money exhibiting its corpse. The ghost, of Imperialism is so transparent that oven a near-sighted man can see 10 to 1 through Its shadowy form. If elected would Bryan call an ex tra session of Congress and urgo the freo and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 10 to 1, without which ho has ropoatodly declared the coun try would go to ruin ? After all, crop conditions all over the country afford very little mater ial for the calamity howlers. Mr. Bryan should codo the sov ereignty of his farm at Lincoln, Nob., to Spain or Frnnce. The land was acquired by the United Stales without tho "consent of the govern ed" by another Democrat, Thomas Joffersou. How Mr. Bryan can con sent to live in Nobraska, when this circumstance is considered, is unox plai nable. Ahont. Hie Mm a nimirman Jones gets Mr. Hill pacified, Mr. Croker breaks out iu a new place. Mr. Towne will have to confine his remarks to the committee on Declination. The North Carolina Democrats would make a vigorous protest against a proposition to proportion atoly disfranchise tho members of Congress from that state. The fact that the Republicans iu sist on choosing their own line of battle during the present campaign Is considered very unfair by the enemy. Indiana continues to contribute prominent Democrats to the Itepub ican cause. Those timid people who imagine the constitution is violated and the repnblio destroyed because there are American soldiers in China without a declaration of war by Congress, may be confronted by knowing that the war with Mexico was fourteen months old before there was A formal declaration thoroof. Silence must not be token as evi dence of a change of heart, and Mr. Bryan has never confessed that he was mistaken either about free sil ver or free trado, Mr. Bryan's speeches illustrate the fact that there is a vast difference between reasons and reasoning. With wheat, corn and cotton prices at the top notch, it is hard to convince the far uers that prosperi ty is a myth. TtlKSPASS NOTICK. Noll.
