Mr. Bryan has one speech for the Democrats, another for the Populists and a third one for the free silver ad vocates. In view of the nature of his support the mnny-sided Kansas City platform was absolutely neces- Bary. What the latest Indianapolis Rath- erings lacked In numbers they made up in gloom. The fact that Chairman Jones i connected with the cotton bale trurst is in a measure consoling to the Van Wycks and other Tammany states men. Misery doesn't like exclusive- ness. The Hon. Charles A. Towne is to attempt to answer Governor ltoose- velt's speeches. It will be recalled that Mr. Towne is the gentleman who was unable to successfully answer the arguments of the men who wanted off of a certain Presidential ticket Mr. Bryan will hardly lie so reck loss as to paramount one of his nom inations. In his Topeka speech of acceptance Mr. Bryan neglected to allude to the manner In which his North Carolina Democratic supporters put on their red shirts and his North Carolina Populist friends out of the recent election. Mr. Bryan understands that the less his friends know of each other the better it will be for him. It is believed that Mr. Bryan has turned out more perforated predic tions thai any other man in public liie. The Hon. John P. Altgeld as At torney General of the United States would be a fine tiling for the anarch ist industry. By the liberal use of the phono graph in hiscampaign work Mr. Bry an may be able to avoid audiences which might make annoying inquir ies abovt the consent of the governed In North Carolina. In 1864 the Democrat were charg ing Abraham Lincoln with being an imperialist and a republican. The Indianapolis Sentinel was particular ly vigorous in this work. Mr. Bry an is not quoting from the files of his Indianapolis orgau. California's trade with the Philip pines now amounts to $2,000,(H)0 a month. California didn't send a sin gle delegate to the Indianopolis gath ering of malcontents. Webster Davis seems to have gone down without even muking a ripple. The Philadelphia Press thinks that is is new for a Presidential candidate to encourage residence to the lawful authority and the settled policy ofthe 'United States. True, it is. i THE CHURCH COLUMN. The thanks of tlia superintendent is hereby extended to the faithful teachers who contributed so gener ously to the pleasure of the day ; al so to the friends who furnished the moans of conveyance. Our city friends are rnpidily leav ing. Many begin to breathe more. easily and some give n sigh of relief as the labor of the boarding season draws near its close. Now is the time to direct our energy in n now channel not to let it cease. The Lord's work demands all the thought and power of our lives. Let us rnlly for bis work and leave no stone unturned to make this year the best in our history. At a special mooting of the Ladies aid society, hold at Mrs. Thomas Armstrongs last Monday evening, fifty dollars was turned over to the Stewards. The efficient work of the ladies of our church is grratly ap preciated. The stewards take great delight in making this publin men tion of their regard for the work of the Ladies aid and extend their hearty thanks. A letter came to tho writer this week stating that our Conference Camp meeting was the best held a Camp Tabor for many years. This is but one of the many indications of a revived spirit life. There are great blessings and abundant re freshings from the Lord coming to others. They are needed in Milfoid Shall they come? FAITH IN THE SUPHKME POWER. Do we look out upon the world with its misery, its disorders, the innocent suffering while the guilty go free, andflnd it hard to accept the doctrine that the Lord rules in all things bringing good out of evil, never permitting any suffering ex- oept where it would injure men otor nally to prevont it? Of couso, wo fiul it hard. The natural man can never see it. Only in the mount of the Lord can it be seen, by him who is willing to give up his own poor judgement when it opposes Divine revelation. This must come first To none others can the vision ho given. But by him who so offers his meroly earthly roason upon tho altar it can now be soen, not blind ly accepted on authority, but seen in the clear light of day by new fa cutties which are able to sue into and through tho mere appearances of things. Rev. Willis L. Qladish. PRAYING FOR STRENGTH. If you have any trial that seems intolerable, pray pray that it be relieved or changed. There is no harm in that. We may pray for anything, not wrong in itself, with perfect freedom, if we do not pray selfishly. One disabled for duty by sickness may pray for health that he may do his work ; or one hemmed in by internal impediments may pray for utterance, that he may serve better the truth and the right Or, if we have a besetting sin, we may pray to be delivered from it, in order to serve God and man, and not be ourselves Satans to mislead and destroy. But the answer to the prayer may be, as it was to P.iul not the removul of the thorn, but instead, a growing insight into its meaning and value. Tlw voice of God in our soul may show us, s we look up to Him, that His strength is enough to enable us to boar it. .1. F. Clarke. Free to Inventors. The expernnce of C. A.
