J. H. Van Ellen, I'rnMSMKR, Mllford, l'lke County, Pa. TnK New York World, that viff oroua Democratic organ, calls the attention of the miblio to the fact that although gold has been Bcorn fully designated by the friends of silver as a " groat coward, "in times of business uncertainty it continues to flow steadily into the United States in the midst of war rumors, the amount engagod for shipment into this country in tho past 80 days aggregating nearly thirty million dollars. All tho United States, nil tin world, indeed, is watching expect antly, anxiously, the course ol President Rio Ktuley indetenninint what shall be the attitude and action of this Government in the Cuban matter. All good citizens every where are commending tho careful, prayorful consideration ho is giving this subject, recognizing as bo doo that the lives of many American citizens would be endangered, not only soldiers and sailors in active war, but millions of others', throuirl. the probability of the introductioi of yellow fever in the United States, which would almost certainly follow a war, and the necessity of constant Intercommunication with our troops in Cuba. Business complaints from Nebras ka, which, a couple of years ago, came from farmers, now come from the men who were accustomed fa loan money to farmers. A recent dispatch from Omaha points out tin fact that mortgages in Nebraska are being canceled at the rate of n . million dollars a month, and says : " There are vast sums of money, not only in the banks and other financial institutions of Omaha, but in other large cities of tho State, ready for investment on reasonable security at 3 per cont interest, which cannot be loaned out at this low figure. Less than two years ago 10 per cent could bo obtained with out difficulty. Now farmers dictate their own terms in the money mar kets of this and adjacent States. The Secretary of Agriculture has asked Congress for an appropriation which will enable his Department to make an extensive corn exhibit at the Paris Exposition. It is Mr. Wilson's belief, in common with that of persons familiar with Euro pean markets, that there is a possi bility of greatly stimulating the do mand abroad for American corn. Corn is suoh a national product that any increase in the demand and prioe would be of immense ben efit to the country. The annual crop of this country is in the neighborhood of two billion bush els, and every cent in rise or fall means a change of valuation of 120,000,000. Europcansdo not know anything about American corn. ' They consider it fit only tor horses, and have no ideas as to how it should be cooked and prepared for the table. The Secretary proposes to make the corn exhibit at the Paris Exposition a great practical demonstration of corn and it prod ucts, having as a 8eciul feature experienced oooks to make corn cakes, dodgers, etc. which will be distributed to visitors. "I feel it my duty to give you a truthful statement of what Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Dia rrhoea Remedy did," writes J. 8. Collins, of Moore, S. C. "I had a child about two years oH, that had the diarrhoea for two months. I tried the best known remedies, but none gave the least relief. Whoa this remedy cume to hand, I gave it as directed, and in two days tho child was completly cured." Sold by druggists and general merchants in Pike County.
