Sunday, November 10, 2013 THE DALLAS POST PAGE 7 Members of Mountain Grange No. 567, Wyoming, participated in Heritage Day at Frances Slocum State Park on Oct. 13. In keeping with our First @ emphasis on good utrition, Mountain Grange showed children how an apple can be a healthy snack with or without peanut but- ter. Children and adults were interested in an apple peeler which also cores and thinly slices apples. Mountain Grange No. 567 was formed and received its charter from Pennsylvania State Grange in 1875 to help farmers get their produce to market. Meetings were ini- tially held in a building near Mount Olivet Road. In 1906, a group of seven farmers from Mt. Zion approached Bell Duckworth for the use of part of his prop- erty near a small stream in + Carverton to be used for the erection of a Grange Hall Duckworth agreed to lease the property to them for $50 as long as the property was only used for the purpose of a Grange Hall. This property ould never be used for any ther purpose. Asa Anderson, Lymon Lord and Cecil V. DeWitt, trustees of Mountain Grange No. 567, provided the rental payment. R.D. Lewis, Clara Lewis, SV. Lewis and Florence Lewis also signed the deed. Mountain Grange No. 567 is part of the rich heritage of the Northeastern part of Luzerne County. It continues to support agriculture and rural life through community service. Women have always been treated as equals to men in this non-profit, fraternal organization. Grange sup- ports family life through inter- generational activities. The Lewis family once had an orchard on Mt. Zion Road and apples were one of their crops. The choice of apples for Heritage Day was a fit- ting way to honor our Grange founders.
