PAGE 10 THE DALLAS POST Sunday, September 29, 2013 Dustin Jones stars on both sides of the hall Lake-I.ehman gridder 1s a returning starter at both fullback and defensive tackle TOM ROBINSON For The Dallas Post The distinction is clear for most football players. Lineman. Or back. Dustin Jones, however, is quite comfortable in both worlds as a returning starter at both fullback and defensive tackle on a Lake- Lehman team that has spent the first half of the regular season establishing itself as a contender for District 2 Class AA and Wyoming Valley Conference Class AA-A Division honors. Jones may not win a race with sophomore speedster Joey Vigil, but he fits well in the Lake-Lehman offen- sive backfield, combining with Vigil and Brady Butler to create a balanced ground game. He may not strike as imposing a figure as 6-foot-7, 315-pounder Pete Borum, but at 6-1 and 250, Jones has the power to team with Borum in strongly dis- couraging opponents from attempting to run the ball on the inside. “It’s a luxury having him,” said Lake-Lehman coach Jerry Gilsky. “He’s a defen- sive player; he’s an offensive player; he’s a bruiser.” Wyoming Area, for one, knows that first hand. Jones ran for three first half touchdowns while mak- ing three tackles for losses and recovering a fumble in Week 3 when the Black Knights avenged a loss in last year’s District 2 playoffs with a 54-7 rout. He had two more first-half touchdowns in Week 4 when Lake- Lehman extended its streak to three straight weeks of at least 35 first-half points and 54 points total with a 61-22 thrashing of Holy Redeemer in the home opener. Jones piled up 172 yards in just nine carries against the Royals. When he’s not running the ball himself, Jones can often be found clearing the way for Vigil or Butler as a lead blocker. Both joined him with at least 120 yards against Holy Redeemer. “Either blocking or run- ning the ball, youre always going as hard as you possi- bly can because when you're running the ball you want those guys blocking for you just as hard as you're block- ing for them,” Jones said. “It’s a trust and friendship BILL TARUTIS|FOR THE TIMES LEADER Lake-Lehman fullback Dustin Jones, center, busts through a hole by linemen Connor McGovern, left, and Pete Borum during a recent practice. between running backs.” Although much of his running comes from empha- sizing his power on plays between the tackles, Jones has shown the footspeed necessary to excel as a run- ning back. “I'm pretty quick for a big- ger guy,” Jones said. And, pretty strong for a guy who doubles as a run- ning back. The combination of Borum and Jones in the middle can disrupt a game plan. “Peter and I are trying not to let them create any large holes,” Jones said. “Usually blocking us is a little hard and with our linebackers, Brady (Butler) and (Kody Pachamovitch), filling the holes fast, it’s very hard for teams to run inside.” While Jones uses both his speed and strength on each side of the ball, he said his mental approach goes e through major changes as he switches sides. “On defense, you just have to let your mind go blank when you're playing and just react,” Jones said. “Offensively, you have to remember every play and the proper steps for every ~ single play.” With Jones providing major - input, the Black Knights are headed in the right direction following a 13-7 opening Nnght loss to Old Forge, a team that has not lost a regular-season game since midway through the 2011 season, including a 50-14 victory over Lake- Lehman in the 2012 opener. “We're a good team and we all realized that,” Jones said. “Our outlook on the season did not change. It’s not like we played a bad game. We played a good team. “We kept our heads up. We didn't let it affect us.” Selenski, Sem grads lead U.S. women’s hockey team Dallas graduate Paige Selenski scored goals in all three games to help the U.S. women’s field hockey team go 3-0 in pool play and reach the semifinals of the Pan American Cup in Mendoza, Argentina. 2013 MODEL YEAR END SALES EVENT Ja\| Wo Telecel (V1 [Yo Toile | fol =B i1a Toate la To Wl [o> &o lols lo Te EM ate) fale [Bo =Ye RINIST-We (=o!
