In his early years, he distin- guished himself in the boxing ring with a record of 23-0, earn- ing a shot at the Golden Gloves in Philadelphia. Later, he was in- ducted into the- Plains Sports Hall of Fame. While employed by Okanite Corp. of Wilkes- Barre in the early 1950s, he be- gan the operation of Barbacci Bottle Gas, serving families for many years through the Wyom- ing Valley and eventually selling: the business to Suburban Pro- pane. He then owned and operated Barbacci’s Picnic Grove. She worked most of her adult life as a horti- culturist and landscape designer and was employed by Huntsville Nursery and Varsity Landscap- ing. DAINIUS - Dr. Alfonsas, 90, of Dallas, died Friday, January 6, 2012, at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. He was born in 1921, in Vieks- niai, Lithuania. Forced in his early 20s to flee his homeland by the Soviet Union’s occupation of Lithuania, he went to Germany, where he became a medical stu- dent. After World War II, he and his family were given the oppor- tunity to immigrate to the Unit- ed States as “DPs” (war dis- placed persons). He arrived at Ellis Island in 1951 and settled in Worcester, Massachusetts, but returned to ‘Germany to finish medical school, graduating from the Uni- versity of Munich in 1960. He then returned to the U.S. and was an intern at Fairlawn and Miriam hospitals in Worces- ter, Mass. He moved to Provi- dence, R.L., in 1964 and was chief resident at the Rhode Island Medical Center in Warwick, R.I., until moving to Pennsylvania and residing in Dallas in the early 1970s. He then worked as medical di- rector of the Northeast Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health, retiring in the mid 1980s. Surviving is a son, Alfonsas A., Dallas; nieces and nephews. ERTLEY - Ron, 79, died on January 7, 2012, after a battle with cancer. He was born in Kingston in 1932 and attended O.B. Pette- bone grade school and Forty Fort High School. He finished his high school career at River- side Military Academy in Gai- nesville, Georgia, and was a graduate . of Duke University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force and retired as a cap- tain. He served on numerous boards locally over the years, in- cluding president of the Wilkes- Barre YMCA, board of the E.M. Kirby Center and vestry of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. He was a trustee of Misericordia University. He was a longtime member of the board of directors of the Kingston National Bank, which later became First Valley Bank. He was president, until his death, of the homeowner’s asso- ciation at his Florida home in Fort Lauderdale. Among his social affiliations, he was a member of Kingston Masonic Lodge No. 395 E.&A.M., Caldwell Consistory, Irem Temple and the Westmore- land Club for over 50 years. He was a member of Glenmau- ra Golf Club, Huntsville Golf Club and Coral Ridge Country Club, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He served on the board of the JD Power Superdealer Roundta- ble, a most prestigious position in the automobile business. She was ordained a deacon in February 1987 and has held many positions in the church. She attended the Russell Hill United Methodist Church, was a member of the Tunkhannock Moose Lodge, was involved in the Senior Peer Counseling and served as a volunteer at Tyler Memorial Hospital. MONTGOMERY - Richard D., 80, of Trucksville, died Saturday, January 7, 2012, in the Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. He was born in Kearny, N.J., on April 18, 1931. He attended Kearny High school and later en- listed in the Navy and served aboard the USS English De- stroyer DD696 during the Ko- rean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. Prior to his retirement, he worked for Sterling Industrial, which later became Altec, for 37 years as a parts manager. After retiring, he worked for Pompey Dodge as a driver. He was a life member of the Trucksville Volunteer Fire Com- pany, a member of the Trucks- ville United Methodist Church for 53 years, a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 37 years with Troop 155 of Trucks- ville. He was also a member of Tin Can Sailors, USS English Associ- ation and the American Legion Post 672 of Dallas. TISHLER - Thomas J. “Tom,” 71, of Old Tioga Turnpike, Ben- ton, died Thursday, January 5, 2012, at his home. He was born December 11, 1940, in Wilkes-Barre, and was the Senior National Sales Train- ing Manager for the Allstate In- surance Company in North- brook, Illinois. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of service. He was a 1960 graduate of Wyoming High School and a 1965 graduate of King’s College. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps. He was an active member of Christ The King Catholic Church of Benton, the Knights of Columbus of Christ the King and the Shickshinny American Legion Post #495. He was also a member of the Mill Race Golf Club.
