SCOUTS CLEAN BACK MOUNTAIN TRAIL A group of Boy Scouts from Troop 146 helped clean the Back Mountain Trail recently by clearing leaves and cleaning drainage areas to help with rain runoff. The Scouts’ efforts will help to preserve the four plus miles of trails in the Back Mountain for years to come. CIVIC BRIEFS Food pantry lists drop-off sites The Board of Directors of the Back Mountain Food Pantry reminds everyone that there are two official collection sites in the Back Mountain where do- nated nonperishable food can be dropped off during regular busi- ness hours: Hilbert’s The Trac- tor Store on Route 415 in Dallas and Cook’s Pharmacy on Route 309 in Shavertown. Monetary donations are also needed at this time of year to help provide turkeys for the more than 185 client families on record at the pantry. Donations may be sent to The Back Mountain Food Pantry, 40 Knob Hill Rd., Trucksville, PA 18708. BMPA holds coat drive The Back Mountain Police Association (BMPA) will hold its annual “Warm Coats for Kids” coat drive today, Nov.13 in the Thomas’ Family Market parking lot in Shavertown. Law enforcement officers (BMPA members) will accept donated new or gently-used coats for children. New or gent- ly-used hats and gloves will also be accepted. Len Meditation program slated An Introduction to Zen Med- itation program will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Now. 15 at Mercy Center on the campus of Misericordia Uni- versity, Dallas. The program includes an explanation of Zen meditation, a brief practice period and time for questions/discussion. Pre- registration required and a free-will offering will be taken. Rotary, Friendly’s team up for fundraiser The Dallas Rotary Club and Friendly’s in Dallas will join forces to host a tasty fundraising event from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thurs- day, Nov. 17 at the restaurant. Monies raised will benefit the annual Rotary Christmas Shop- ping Spree for 45 less fortunate children in the Back Mountain area. Friendly’s will donate a per- centage of the proceeds to the shopping spree event. Take-out and gift card purchases are also included. Yard waste pickup in Kingston Township The Kingston Township Board of Supervisors has an- nounced the Yard Waste/ Bagged Leaf Pickup will contin- ue through November 18. Residents are advised to have yard waste and bagged leaves places at the curbside for pick- up. Yard waste consists of sticks and twigs bundled three feet in length by one foot in height an one food wide. Square dance set The Franklin Township Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a square dance featur- ing “Just Us Country Duo” from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Franklin Township Volun- teer Fire Company Hall, 329 Orange Rd., Orange. GOREY - Benjamin W., 74, of Kingston Township, died Mon- day, October 31, 2011, at Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. He was born in Port Blan- chard, graduated from Pittston Central Catholic High School and continued his education at Penn State University, earning an associate’s degree in Engi- neering. He was a member of the 109th Army National Guard for 23 years, retiring with the rank Mas- ter Sergeant. He was employed for 20 years at Brodder and Asso- ciates as a city planner. He served as a zoning officer for Kingston Township and was a volunteer on the township’s Planning Board. He was a life time member of Harvey’s Lake Rod and Gun Club, the Pittston Central Catholic High School Reunion Committee and the Na- tional Rifle Association. He was a member of St. Barba- ra’s Church, Exeter, the former St. Anthony of Padua Church. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Rosemary Piec- zynski; sons, Benjamin W. She worked as a secretary, teacher and administrator in the Tunkhannock Area School Sys- tem, serving as principal at the Mill City, Evans Falls and Me- hoopany elementary schools.
