PEOPLE BRIEFS Hughes-Blaum receives award Bloomsburg University stu- dent and 2008 Dallas High School graduate, Kelsey Hughes-Blaum, of Shavertown, received the Outstanding En- glish Major Award for 2011-12 resented by the English Asso- Bin of Pennsylvania State niversities at its annual con- ference on October 15. Hughes-Blaum presented an original paper and participated in and moderated panel dis- cussions. A senior with dual majors in English and Secondary Educa- tion, Hughes-Blaum has achieved dean’s list status each of the past five semesters and carried a 3.85 GPA into her senior year at Bloomsburg. She is also an elected member of Sigma Tau Delta, the Interna- tional, English Honor Society and currently serves as Presi- dent of its Bloomsburg Uni- versity Chapter. She is the daughter of Atty. Jim and Joan Blaum and Mary Hughes, of Shavertown. MU students gain Wall Street experience Rachel Ayers, of Dallas; Kayla Chappell, of Hunlock Creek; and Erik Sandstrom, of Harveys Lake, were among Misericordia University busi- ness majors who recently expe- rienced Wall Street during an experiential learning trip host- Qc by representatives of Mor- gan Stanley Smith Barney and ParenteBeard. Grossman participates in fundraising effort Gabrielle Grossman, of Sha- vertown, an eighth-grade stu- dent at Wyoming Seminary Lower School, worked with her fellow students during a fun- draising drive to benefit local victims of the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee. Grossman was the Blue Team leader during the project. Cornia receives award Steve Cornia, of Shavertown, received the Environmental Stewardship Award at Lock Haven University’s 51st Annual Science Convocation on Octo- ber 28. Stredny recognized at Scranton Edward Stredny, of Dallas, was among nine students from The University of Scranton to receive a 2011 President’s Fel- lowship for Summer Research Award. A junior biochemistry, cell and molecular biology major, Stredny was mentored by Tim- othy Foley, Ph.D, associate professor of chemistry. A member of Troop #155, of Trucksville, Benedetti is one of approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete acommunity or church- related project to earn his Eagle. Benedetti chose to install a new, double-sided, illuminated, announcer sign with changeable letters on a stone monument base for his church, Gate of Heaven Church in Dallas. He obtained plans, funding, zoning permits for the project as well. Benedetti has served his troop as Patrol Leader and Assistant Se- nior Patrol Leader and received the Arrow of Light Award, Parvuli Dei Award and the Ad Altare Dei Award. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, Lowwapaneu Lodge 191. He has been recognized by the Diocese of Scranton for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and is a Life Member of the Na- tional Eagle Scout Association. He has spent many years at Goose Pond Summer Camp, al- ways during the week of his birth- day. A 2011 graduate of Dallas High School where he was active in the Key Club, aKiwanis service group throughout all four years of high school, Benedetti was also on the school soccer team. He has been a student of Sue Hand’s Imagery Art Studio for several years and has received many awards for his art. Currently, he is attending Penn State University Wilkes-Barre where he is enrolled in the archi- tectural engineering program. He is the son of Paul and Renee Benedetti, of Dallas.
