KELLY - Donald “Donnie” Robert, 64, of Noxen, died Sun- day, September 25, 2011, from multiple traumatic injuries suf- fered in a motor vehicle acci- dent. He was born August 17, 1947, was a 1965 graduate of Dallas High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1966 where he served in Germany for one year and seven months. In 1968, he owned his own business, Kelly’s Steeple Paint- ing Unlimited. He also worked as a mechanic and a boilermak- er. In 1992, he attended Luzerne County Community College, where he earned his associate’s degree in science. He was a member of the Boi- lermakers Union Post No. 13 and the Sports Mans Club. He was born in Nanticoke on January 11, 1920, graduated from Dallas Borough School in 1937 and continued his educa- tion in electronics at CREI (Capital Radio Electronics Insti- tute) in Washington, D.C., after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. As a Navy veteran, he served on the USS Nicholas DD449, a Fletcher class destroyer, from 1942 through 1945, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three Silver stars and one Bronze star, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp, World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Commenda- tion Ribbon and Philippine Lib- eration ribbon with two bronze stars. At the age of 88, he published a book titled “From Guadalcanal to Tokyo Bay; A Destroyer Sail- or’s Story” of his memories and experiences while serving dur- ing World War II. He was employed by RCA, Washington, D.C., and later by the Tobyhanna Army Depot as an Electronics Metrology Lab Supervisor, retiring in 1972.
