Conquering Pagoda Mountain Joseph Pagoda, of Lehman Township, his sons, Christopher, of Conshohocken, and Aaron, of Philadelphia, and his nephew Walter Pagoda III, of Plymouth, cently traveled to the summit . Pagoda Mountain in Colora- do’s Rocky Mountain National Park. The mountain was named in 1911 by Dean Babcock who thought the peak reminded him of a Pagoda temple. Pagoda Mountain (13,505) lies in northern Rocky Mountain National Park and shares a ridge- line with Long’s Peak (14,289’). The Pagodas started making plans in 2010 and, once their re- quest for backcountry campsites was approved by the park office, plans fell into place. They backpacked on August 1 up through the Glacier Gorge val- ley. Setting out at 3 p.m., they reac- hed the summit of Pagoda Moun- tain at 10 a.m. where they spent 40 minutes taking photographs and videos of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. After two more days of back- packing in the park, they hiked out, ending their trip with addi- tional sightseeing, a tour of the New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, Co. and a stay in down- town Denver for a celebratory dinner. All proceeds from the raffle and food sales will benefit Rotary charities which funds programs for youth and the elderly in the community.
