Sunday, June 5, 2011 THE DALLAS POST PAGE 13 CHIEF Continued from Page 3 well as whether it was neces- sary for a metering station to be so close to the Transco pipe- line. Hamilton said it was not physically necessary but having one further away would be im- @ ctica for Transco. McNealis asked about ill-ef- fects of handling glycol, a de- hydrating agent used to re- move water from the natural gas. The substance would be collected in a 2,000-gallon tank on-site. Hamilton said rubber gloves are used to handle it because it can dry the skin. Resident Joe Cigan asked about protective equipment employees would wear on-site before Komoroski asked wheth- er he was asking the question as a resident or as an attorney with the state Department of Environmental Protection. Cigan said he was asking as a resident and has two children attending Dallas schools. After the hearing, Cigan said he didn’t believe a facility at which employees had to wear protective equipment or a 100- foot radio tower belonged in a residential neighborhood. whether it “made sense” to lo- cate a metering station so close to a school. HARP Continued from Page 3 of money since that old Charger with its 440 six-pack passed ev- erything but a gas station and saw an approaching toll sign. A mad scramble ensued going through pockets and bags as I pulled to the side before the toll. Under the floor mat behind the passenger seat was money that had fallen out of friends’ pockets while they were hiding under blankets so we didn’t have to pay for them at the West Side Drive- In — just enough to cover the toll. Which brings us to road maps. At any one point in time, there would be at least a dozen differ- ent maps in the car or truck. Maps from all the east coast states and Canada were strewn out the vehicle along with whatever local street maps we could find from the cities we vis- ited. They needed to be updated every year due to the amount of new highways and interstates be- ing built. Otherwise, you'd get lost on your next trip. One push of a button if you are lost and — Shazaam - you find your way. A GPS would have been a great help if it was available when I was guiding in the Keys but they were not on the market at that time and I had to learn how to read charts and plot courses. I had the Mrs. out one day in Florida Bay to show her where I was fishing and my newly-acquired navigating skills. We were about 15 miles in- to the bay when a thunderstorm caught us. Trying to run around it was futile and I could still see some vaguely familiar islands in the 25 square miles of water with islands that all look the same. We were plowing through three footers when the push pole was ripped off the side of the boat by a wave. Not wanting to lose an $800 pole, I turned and managed to find it and get it back on board. The problem was we could no longer see any islands through the rain. Remembering which di- rection the waves had been hit- ting the bow, I continued on, and about 45 minutes later, found a sign post for the Intracoastal Wa- terway. I found the corresponding pole on the chart and determined we had ended up about 12 miles north of the intended destina- tion. Cold and wet, the Mrs. in- structed me to take her back to the dock. The fun of getting lost on a trip and being told repeatedly by your navigator in the passenger seat (in which I have now installed her own steering wheel and brake and gas pedals) “Why don’t you stop and ask directions?” are no more.
