The result of the group’s meetings is a seven- item dress code policy proposed for all students in the district for the 2011-12 year. Dressing for success The list features what would be deemed permissible within the school, and Shaffer said the new surroundings for high school stu- dents in September would play a part in how they should dress. Shirts that cover from the col- lar bone to waistline, pants, skirts and shorts with finished hem lines and shoes with a backing or back strap are among the pro- posed requirements. T-shirts are still an issue being discussed on the administrative level. In the proposed policy, only t-shirts with the Dallas school lo- go would be permitted in school, but Shaffer said this item is the one most likely to change. He said the new building will be climate controlled throughout the year, whereas the current Dal- las High School building has had issues with heating and air condi- tioning in the past and students would wear coats indoors during winter or more revealing cloth- ing during warmer months. Shaffer and students believe the new, state-of-the-art building which students will attend in mid-September will also lead to a more professional atmosphere and the proposed dress code will reflect that. “Sometimes people come to school looking like they just rolled out of bed,” said John Weaver, 17, of Dallas. “They look like they came to school because they had to, not to look decent.” Weaver said the changing dress code will change students’ mindsets, as well. He believes a more professional look will posi- tively affect education. “There’s data proving that,” said Shaffer. CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK/ FOR THE TIMES LEADER § Rory Moran exhibits flip flops which will not be acceptable wear at } Dallas High School next year. Managing schools’ consistency Other schools in the district have differing policies for various reasons. Middle School Principal Tho- mas Duffy said children’s physi- cal development through sixth, seventh and eighth grade can dic- tate hem lengths on shorts and skirts = because a 12-year-old child’s body is smaller than that of a 17-year-old. For this reason, hem lines are to be no longer than one inch above the knee at the high school, while at the middle school, shorts and skirts canbe at least mid-thigh length. Wyecallis Elementary has a pol- | icy addendum to the 2000 dis- including McCarthy, teachers trict-wide policy that offers in- sight into the needs of elemen- : tary students, such as appropri- | ate attire for recess and other outdoor activities. Flip flops are discouraged at i both elementary schools, but are ; allowed at the middle school. | The new high school policy would deem flip flops impermis- sible due to safety concerns on the various stairwells planned for the new building. Duffy said there has not been any flip flop issues in the two-sto- ry middle school building, but he understands the concern and supports district policy. dents believe the dress code : would help transition younger students into preparing for life at | the high school. “As kids get older, they’ll know what to expect,” said Shaffer. Weaver said students often pick up trends at the middle school level and try to continue to flaunt their fashions on the high school level. Shaffer said the dress code change is about ma- : naging consistency within the high school. Maintaining fashion freedom While there are items on the | proposed dress code policy that are slightly more restrictive than past years, Shaffer said he has spent time in districts with far © less fashion freedom than the | Dallas School District. “A neighboring school district where I once worked didn’t allow men to have facial hair,” he said. * “There’s a lot of latitude in what * we have here.” McCarthy believes the dress code will allow students to still maintain their own look without affecting the educational envi- ronment. “Anyone who doesn’t want this wants to look like they just rolled out of bed,” she said. © PUZILE ANSWERS — King Crossword — Puzzles, Page 2 : Answer So Go Figure! —— \ —__guper Crossword Solution time: 21 mins. answers Answers ols FIATKTTIR PlAlc JIIIMBRAIPIT EINIAIC|T VIAIN[D|AL -— O|R|E DAR B|A|Z LIEIA LIEloINIEE®HIUIR 7 3 7 28 T/ANMMOIN[E STE al TInT A Pla a a LIE[C|H|E[R[OJU|SEME|R]|A ECON pend Her us RIE|O SiC RIAIB X + -— C|A|S|S|E|T|T|E|T|A|P|E A/D|O|R[N|S T|1|S AllI|S|{L|E B|O P|A|C|E|R|S E|U (0) eR c/H EEL PAIN[D OlR[A Selo uINH Il S(O E[LIM[E[R] | 4 6 1 Siena sor ys Me SITIEIM i 0 O|ZI|E C|O(M{P|U|T|E|R|P|R|O|G|IRIAIM P|G|A DIE|E|R M| I |R|E slE[R|T|FINBIURIENIRIA x + oir [C IANA e AMEOlvIe SBS A Tale M{O|UIN|T R RIA ovr T|H E[A[D EI slate NASIR a A RIAIK|I|S|H P|O 2 9 25 N(E|E|D|N|T LIAIWIRIEINCIEIWIE|L|K Alc|EMMH[E|[R|O|D STLTATTHEE (Ss CCH ClUlE EIRIAISIE LialufR[i[elMEIT[CAlLFIMOTA TINE | A|IR|(N|O[L|D W|I|L|K|I|E Y|E|S DIE|N|T|S 20 18 16 MA|T[T]E|D RIA[s[P|Y Abi ME VN i® g pa i : # § 4 4 b k i a | 5 ; = ¢ ] 2 1) 4 X 3 i Clg bi : mio|<|/mBl—=x|m mmr m ¥ % i A > % HN ‘© ¢ 7
